There are now established yoga therapy programs at major health care centers, I’m honored to have been on leading edge of this integration.

For the past eight years I’ve taught yoga at an inpatient psychiatric facility in Northern Virginia.

Yoga heals.

You might feel like you’re bad at making decisions (or not good at making good ones).

It’s something we all struggle with due to the way our brains are made.

Behind every decision, there are psychological factors that shape the way we think and act. Understanding these factors can make them easier to overcome.

Decide you want it more than you are afraid of it.

Grief increases the body’s threat response “it’ll happen again” is the body’s reaction.
Survival instincts become more triggered.

Be prepared for an emotional wallop, and know that it’s completely normal.


It turns out “sunny disposition” is more than just an expression: Researchers have found more mental health distress in people during seasons with little sun exposure.

Plenty of sunshine is associated with better mental health — the availability of sunshine has more impact on mood than rainfall, temperature, or any other environmental factor.


The “repetition compulsion” is a basic concept in psychotherapy.

The compulsion to repeat is particularly interesting because what is repeated is not pleasurable trace the repetitions to childhood experiences that get replayed in adulthood.

Psychology research trace the repetitions to childhood experiences that get replayed in adulthood.


When we can talk about our feelings, they become less overwhelming, less upsetting, and less scary.

This is an important time to focus on mental wellbeing.

One of the most potent influences on your nervous system is the people around you.



Actions show a persons real attitude.
There’s more value in what they do vs say, and sometimes inaction speaks louder than both of them.


Hero Pose is a seated yoga posture.

Hero refers to someone admired for their courage and doing the right things.

In this pose ‘hero’ symbolically refers to fighting our inner turbulence.

Hero’s pose is common in meditative yoga class sequences.

This pose also stretches the thighs and ankles while improving posture.



What is the purpose of hands on assists in yoga?

Hands-on assists can be an incredibly potent tool for helping yoga students find better alignment, relaxation, stability, and extension.

Safety is important here both physically and emotionally.

If you are a teacher, you want to avoid taking them by surprise, especially if they are with their eyes closed, in deep concentration or in a balancing pose.

*Always ask for consent.


Critics, who have something to say about everything. Talkers, who talk a big game and take no action. Doers lead by example, motivating others through their activities and accomplishments.



With a culture of belonging, you get an environment that supports your comfort, connection, and contribution.


When in doubt, go to yoga.



An empath is a person highly attuned to the feelings and emotions of those around them. Empaths feel what another person is feeling at a deep emotional level.
