Good Morning! In light if this weekends extreme weather. Toano Open Air Market has elected to cancel.
Virginia Bread will be doing order pickup though so be sure to shoot them an email.
Devilrayforgeworks is on the road today! Headed north to Eliccot, then Sykesville. We are traveling to provide a leather working demo for Patina! As such we will not be at the Toano Open Air Market! We hope to see you next weekend though!
Spooky season is officially here! Time to fill up my favorite jar from with candy corn!
Somedays being a leather worker looks like making bags, other days it's carving. Today it's utilitarian. I was asked to replace plastic straps on gear a client had. All the plastic had gone rotten and begun to crumble. So make a template, sharpen the tools, order the snaps and away I go. 10 sets of straps, all with black leather tankote and matte black snaps.
This week's repair bench includes, a pair of ranger belts and a belt build for a funky buckle.
The ranger belts just need a new billet on the tab end, so I'll cut some new ones and dye to match scoot them up the belt to fit the customer better.
The buckle is really funky, and will require a belt with snaps on both ends so it can be sized up and down. Given it's from the 70s I'm not surprised.
Hows this for a scenery change? The mill at fine creek is a cool antique venue, with a few different selections of scenery. Today's wedding is in the old mill building itself.
Sometimes it's a big bag build, sometimes it's a simple repair. This rafia basket just needed a little leather work to get it working again.

Customer came to me with an exhausted dress belt. It was dry rotted, flaking apart and tearing in places. He explained he had some sentimentality attached to the belt and wondered if could use his hardware on a new body. So I build him this. 6oz leather lined with 4oz, glued stitched and his fittings attached.

Working hard today on another saddlebag crossbody purse. I had some of this soft elk scrap given to me by my mentor so I found a use for it. What do you all think of the contrast?
This was a fantastic weekend, with the Williamsburg Knitting Guild joining us with their work and art! As well as dozens of great vendors from Oysters, to local wool, spices and more. Personally I'm a fan of this lemon blueberry coffee cake from Virginia Bread. Of course I had to say hi to these special four legged customers with a treat. Managed to wrap up these beautiful totes too.

How is this for special? It's a protractor from the 18th century. Look at that fine scroll and piercing work, all for a tool that would have sat on a desk. This example is from George Mason's Gunston hall, and I encourage you to go see it for yourself.
Starting the day with a bit of history at George Mason's Gunston hall.

It's leather day! There's something special hiding in this batch.
I've had a lot of request for a heavy duty belt, one built for tools and holsters. So here is the example sample. Built from 2 layers of leather, the top layer from 10oz bridle leather, and the inside built from 5oz vegtan. Solid brass buckle and for customer belts chicago screws so you can change your buckles anytime you like.
Who likes clutches? Just finished these geometric and floral clutches up. Built of veg tanned leather, hand dyed, oiled, and antiqued!

Stopped by this local institution for some handmade milkshakes and other treats today. Nothing like a Bergeys Milkshake to make you feel like a kid again.
And people wonder why leather workers charge so much for wallets. All these parts, just for four wallets. That's not including the fifth I had to build to check the pattern.
A fun if chilly day to sell here at the Toano Open Air Market.
