An incredibly common source of worry and fear!

Babies develop in patterns unique to them. 👶🏼

On the other hand, milestones exist as communication tools between parents and professionals.

Milestones or gross motor delays can be indicative of other diagnoses that require further medical evaluation. Additionally, milestones help lay the musculoskeletal foundation for your kiddos strength, mobility and core control! 💪🏼

So, what can you do?

Rather than honoring the transformation that has taken place, the cultural conversation around new motherhood, at least in the United States, has too often focused on “bouncing back.”

When are you going back to work?
When are you going to fit into your jeans again? When are you going to return to the person you were before you had the baby?

‘Bounce back’ culture is alive and well when it comes to women’s postpartum bodies but a lot of us also walk into motherhood with an unconscious expectation that everything else in our life should bounce back too.

That’s just not the case. And while it can sound like a bad thing at first, it’s simultaneously an amazing opportunity for growth and healing.

Allow yourself grace as we navigate this period of together . Let’s enjoy this. ❤️

As a local practitioner, I must say it seems the majority of my patients are sick😷🤧 ATM.

As a result, coughing has been a really tough symptom for those dealing with pelvic floor dysfunction.😫

Properly utilizing pelvic floor muscle contractions can help both in preparation for and throughout a couch to augment the amount of urethral movement and decrease incontinence.

How does this make sense? 🤯

As physical therapists, we visit patients in the hospital to be sure they are capable of navigating stairs, walking into the home, carry light objects, dress etc.

Why does a mother undergo massive abdominal surgery or tear her Va&ina and never meet with a PT?

Do we not need to go home and immediately go up and down stairs ?

Lift a squirmy newborn baby?

Sit up / lay down 493728 times per day?

Stand / rock / soothe 2947385 hours per day?

Why is pelvic floor physical therapy not standard of care postpartum?

You’re right, I don’t know either. But it should be.

Spent my day ! 🏛️

Had the opportunity to lobby today in favor of small businesses. It was a truly eye opening and amazing experience.

I met senators, saw senators, was confronted by protestors, and learned SO MUCH.

An exciting change of pace from my day to day, in order to help my small business grow and thrive while protecting my patients.

Ever have a really $hit&y day?

I mean, let me first say, the day wasn’t that bad. Between the hours of 9-5, they were solid. Patients were amazing, babies were precious, and progress toward goals were made. Really great conversations were had.

Then the hammer drops and your day goes to crap. You know tomorrow will be better, but in the moment, it really stings.

All I do day in and day out is work my butt off to help my patients. I rarely say no to an appointment. I drive all over kingdom come to see people at home. I miss moments with my kids to make sure my patients are seen when it works for them…but sometimes that isn’t enough.

Sometimes words sting. Intentions are misunderstood.

So when I endure these low moments of self employment, I have to remind myself I do this job because I am good at it. I truly care for you, and empathize with you. I am passionate about pelvic health. I am invested in you. ❤️

aka some cutesy term coined to describe the changes we experience mentally during pregnancy and after. Turns out, there is physiological truth to this.

A study published by Hoekzema et al in the journal Nature, Nov 2022, investigated the neural changes to the brain in those who have given birth compared to those who have not. The findings are astounding.

🧠 pregnancy renders pronounced, consistent changes in brain structure

🧠 brains of those who had given birth showed: shrunken gray matter in regions such as the temporal and frontal cortices and decreased cortical thickness

🧠 this is not evidence of a deteriorating brain, but rather a fine tuning of connections, or synaptic reorganization making those who have given birth more efficient and streamlined to do what is needed to care for baby 🤯

🧠 changes are prominently located in regions of the brain associated with theory of the mind, the ability to understand what someone else is feeling or needing

🧠 animal studies had previously shown that babies become even more rewarding for mothers than co***ne 😳

We’ve all had those doctor’s appointments.

“How are you? Do you have any concerns?” And then your 10 minutes are up. You leave your appointment wondering what just happened, and think of 15 things you wish you would’ve asked or had time to ask. Or, you simply felt brushed off.

“It’s normal.” “You just had a baby, that’s normal.” “It’ll get better.”

Rest assure, I won’t be that provider for you. Period. None of us at PhysioCore will brush you off. You will be heard.

Are the holidays increasing your pelvic floor symptoms? 😫

Why?🤯

🍷Diet: caffeine, alcohol and sugar are bladder irritants causing increased urge and frequency. Processed foods, dairy and gluten can also cause bloating and constipation. 🍪

😥Stress: not only does stress cause us to keep our shoulders up next to our ears, but we hold tension in our pelvic floor! This tension doesn’t only cause increased pelvic pain, but can also contribute to urinary incontinence, constipation, and weakness! 😞

🏃🏼‍♀️💨Activity: long hours of standing in the kitchen may result in that nagging “heavy” feeling in your pelvic floor. Alternatively, lack of exercise may cause increased stress. OR, picking up a new exercise goal your body isn’t ready for may alert you to symptoms of incontinence with jumping. All signs to contact a pelvic PT 😊

How can we manage at home?

🧘‍♀️Stress – Use meditation, yoga, imagery, relaxation, and deep breathing (or another preferred method) to help manage stress levels. The cause for stress will be there, it’s all about how we respond to it!

Diet – Drink plenty of water! (We recommend at least half of your body weight in ounces of water each day!) This will help balance the effects of irritants within your bladder as well as assist your digestive system in the elimination of those fatty foods!

Activity – Try to fit 30 minutes of activity into each day (Set a goal of 5 days a week). Pick a mode of exercise that you enjoy. **Exercise can also help combat the negative effects of stress and diet!

Need to add more fiber to your diet?

Did you know, it’s recommended we take in between 27-35 grams of fiber per day. I bet you aren’t getting that much!

Why? A new analysis of almost 250 studies confirmed on a large scale that eating lots of fiber from vegetables, fruits, and whole grains can decrease your risk of dying from heart disease and cancer. Those who ate the most fiber reduced their risk of dying from cardiac disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and/or colon cancer by 16% to 24%, compared to people who ate very little fiber. Fiber also helps manage weight and constipation.

We aren’t talking fiber gummies here either. Try instead to:

🥣Start your day with a bowl of high-fiber cereal.
🥗Add vegetables, dried beans, and peas to soups.
🥜Add nuts, seeds, and fruit to plain yogurt.
🍲Make a vegetarian chili filled with different types of beans and vegetables.
🍓Add berries, nuts, and seeds to salads.
🥦🥕Try snacking on vegetables such as cauliflower, broccoli, carrots, and green beans. Serve them with a healthy dip such as hummus or a fresh salsa.
🍎Eat more whole, natural foods and fewer processed foods.

Try this recipe this holiday season:

Avocado Sweet Potato Bites🍠🥑
Ingredients:
1 medium sweet potato, washed and sliced lengthwise into ¼- slices
1 ripe avocado, pitted and peeled
Juice of ½ to 1 lime, to taste
Sea salt
⅓ cup pomegranate seeds
¼ cup crushed toasted hazelnuts or shelled h**p seeds (optional)

Instructions:
1.Toast the sweet potato slices in a toaster* for 5 to 10 minutes, or until cooked through and firm-tender. You may need to toast multiple times depending on the toasting length for your toaster.
2.While the sweet potato slices toast, add the avocado to a small bowl and use the back of a fork to mash it to desired consistency. Add the lime juice and sea salt, to taste, and gently mash again to incorporate.
3.Slather each sweet potato toast with the mashed avocado. Top with the pomegranate seeds and hazelnuts or h**p seeds (if using). Season with a pinch of sea salt, if desired, and serve immediately.🤤
