Charlene Arcila (1963 โ 2015) was a dedicated LGBTQ+ activist, faith leader, educator, and advocate for HIV/AIDS efforts in Philadelphia. She founded the Philadelphia Trans Health Conference in 2000 to be a space for resources and support for low-income trans and gender nonconforming people. Now called the Trans Wellness Conference, it is the largest free conference for transgender and gender-nonconforming health care and wellness support in the world.
Her wide range of roles and accomplishments include working for the Philadelphia AIDS Consortium for 20 years, serving as treasurer for the William Way LGBT Community Center, sitting on the board of directors for the Mazzoni Center, and serving as a minster at the Unity Fellowship of Christ Church Philadelphia from 2009 until her passing.
She is well known for fighting gender discrimination in SEPTA, successfully advocating for them to remove gender markers on transportation passes in 2013, allowing trans and gender nonconforming people to ride public transit without facing harmful discrimination.
Her activism has had lasting impacts on LGBTQ+ people in Philadelphia and around the world.
