Burberry was established in the mid-1800s by Thomas Burberry, a 21-year-old draper’s apprentice from England. Thomas was an innovative and creative young man, and he wanted to create a clothing line that was both fashionable and protective against the elements. He developed breathable, water-resistant gabardine fabric that could be used to make coats and jackets. He then designed a distinctive tartan pattern that was printed on the fabric, creating the Burberry plaid.
