Community update COVID-19 Booster shot

Recently, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommended a single dose booster shot of COVID-19 vaccines in certain populations.

If you are eligible for a booster and would like a Moderna booster shot contact your local pharmacy or register for an upcoming vaccine clinic on the Polk County Public Health website: http://www.co.polk.mn.us/191/Public-Health. At this time, Altru Clinic in Crookston and Sanford Health East Grand Forks will not be offering Moderna booster shots, but instead preparing for the anticipated Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) approval of COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11.

If you are eligible for a booster and would like a Pfizer booster shot contact your health care provider, local pharmacy or visit the Polk County Public Health website: http://www.co.polk.mn.us/191/Public-Health to register for an upcoming vaccine clinic.

CDC recommendations for single dose booster shots:

For individuals who received a Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine, the following groups are eligible for a booster dose at six months or more after completing their initial series:

• 65 years and older
• Age 18+ who live in long-term care settings: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/booster-shot.html#long-term-care
• Age 18+ who have underlying medical conditions: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/need-extra-precautions/people-with-medical-conditions.html
• Age 18+ who work or live in high-risk settings: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/booster-shot.html#HighRisk

For individuals who received the Johnson & Johnson/Janssen COVID-19 vaccine, booster doses are also recommended for those who are 18 and older and who were vaccinated two or more months ago.

There are now booster recommendations for all three available COVID-19 vaccines in the United States. Eligible individuals may choose which vaccine they receive as a booster dose, and CDC’s recommendations now allow for this type of mix and match dosing for booster shots.

Polk County Public Health is planning to offer weekly Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 booster clinics. Future clinic information will be posted on our Polk County Public Health website: http://www.co.polk.mn.us/191/Public-Health

Community update for COVID-19

10/21/2021

Hospitalizations remain very high statewide—for COVID-19 as well as other illnesses and injuries—with only 9.8% of all inpatient hospital beds and 6.7% of all ICU beds currently available on October 20. At this critical time, please take precautions to stay out of the hospital, including being up to date on your immunizations and practicing injury prevention.

Grand Forks Public Health has deliberately ignored the New Americans in regards to health services during the pandemic. New Americans Integration Center has tried to corporate and work with Grand Forks Public Health multiple sides. But no efforts have been made by Grand Forks Public Health. All resources and support are given to Mainstream agencies who have no idea the difficulties new Americans and immigrants face.We work for the immigrants and new Americans community. Multiple times we have tried to bring the pressing issues immigrants are facing to grand Forks Public Health. So far, we’ve been unsuccessful in getting any solid support from them. The new Americans community in grand forks has been under vaccinated with little to know awareness of Covid 19. Most of the community can’t speak English. It’s our primary job to ensure their well educated and up to date regarding the pandemic. Especially when it comes to getting the vaccine ( in which many may not take due to lack of knowledge) as well as following health and guidelines. New Americans and Immigrants have been living in grand forks for over a decade now. They’ve been constantly disregarded when it comes to health issues. Their voices are unheard. Only recently have they gotten support from the new Grand Forks mayor Brandon Bochenski, with whom New Americans Integration Center has a solid relationship with and has been truly helpful in giving weight and importance to the issues new Americans face. His office is always open to the community. He’s been constantly vocal in addressing issues the community face. They’ve put their faith in him now as they felt a massive change in how the community and their issues are being prioritized. But the issue remains with the GFPH. Many a times, Immigrants and New Americans living in Grand Forks come over to East Grand Forks looking for vaccine or Heath support. Due to a lack of proper aid by Grand Forks Public Health. Our desire is for Grand Forks to be a welcoming place. Regardless of ethnicity, color and financial status. The immigrant community now firmly believe Grand Forks Public Health doesn’t care about the pandemic. This believe stems from lack of aid and communication from GFPH. Even on their website, there’s no translation available when it comes to Covid 19 information. Anyone who doesn’t speak English is unable to stay updated on the pandemic. We hope Grand Forks Public Health realizes the issue at hand and starts taking the new Americans/immigrants and their struggles seriously. We at New Americans Integration Center are ready to help this community and fulfill their needs always. We ask Grand Forks Public Health to corporate with us so we can help this community that has been massively under facilitated especially when it comes health issues. Thank You.

Congratulations Cani Striker Sangabo

Congratulations to Moorhead human rights advocate Cani Adan! On Tuesday, October 12, the Moorhead City Council and Mayor Shelly Carlson presented Cani with the MoorHeart award.

In addition to chairing the City of Moorhead Human Rights Commission, Cani works at the Afro American Development Center and volunteers with many groups in the community. He was nominated by four separate individuals in Moorhead. One of the nominations was especially moving:

"Cani changed the life of our family. He worked for 13 months to help find jobs for me and my wife. We used to depend on County Benefits but not anymore and the reason is Cani."

The MoorHeart award is an opportunity to recognize individuals who go above and beyond to demonstrate community within our City by their actions and service. A team of volunteers from city boards and commissions selects award recipients. The MoorHeart award is commemorated with a piece of art commissioned from Moorhead-based artist Karman Rheault especially for this purpose.

Previous 2021 winners:
• Former Mayor Johnathan Judd
• The administrators of Moorhead=Fantastic (Mara Morken, Chris Orth, and Marsha Drewlow Wichmann)

Information on nominating individuals/organizations for the MoorHeart award can be found at www.cityofmoorhead.com. (Search for MoorHeart Award.) Contributions large and small are worthy of nomination!
