I get the opportunity to work with amazing couples, in this case Anna & Brendan not only once but twice on their wedding days. This one is from their lovely backyard wedding. Looking back at this image with a new color grade) I can’t help but notice the depth and dimension it has telling their story, shot with an 85mm 1.2 @ 1.4. I miss the 👀.

In 2023 I stopped using 85mm 1.2. I wanted a challenge to see if could get away with just a 70-200mm. Compression at 200mm 2.8 has been my secret weapon for the duration of 2023. Are you in for primes or zooms?

Photographers friends would say the image is soft (50mm @ 1.8 into the sun with an intense backlit), the gear is not good enough, mis-focus, the dynamic range isn’t good on this camera, what is with the dutch tilt . That being said there is a time to be an artist and a time to be a storyteller this one happens to be the latter.

The photo sessions is probably the only time couples get to experience being newly weds, away from family, friends and thoughts of the wedding day logistics, all of course before the epic party. How about hang back and capture real moments of two people begin themselves.

I often get asked about how I go about capturing portraits and my answer is simple. “Be you!” Every wedding I have the unique opportunity to work with engaging couples and honestly there is no true answer to that question. It doesn’t matter how posed a photo can be but if you aren’t true to yourself, the magic isn’t there. Claire + Ben made MAGIC.
