In 2015, global leaders agreed to work toward limiting human-induced planetary warming to a maximum of 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. The 2.6 degrees Fahrenheit the United States has warmed in the past several decades is just a tenth of a degree below that limit — 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit is equal to 1.5 degrees C.
Human activities, including energy production, deforestation and transportation, emit heat-trapping greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere, where they continue to help push the global temperature upward. Droughts, wildfires, floods and other climate and weather events are becoming more frequent and severe across the globe with major consequences for individuals, communities and the economy. In 2021, the contiguous U.S. suffered the largest number of disaster-related deaths in a decade. It also saw 20 separate billion-dollar disasters — the second-highest annual number of such disasters on record.
Around six out of 10 Americans say the global community is doing too little to address climate change, according to an October 2021 PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist poll. But the nation's youth remain hopeful — in a separate October 2021 poll conducted by the NewsHour and Generation Lab, a majority of people ages 13 to 29 said they think there's still time to prevent the worst long-term consequences of a warming planet.

Bird migration, as Cornell Lab of Ornithology puts it, is one of the "greatest, mostly unseen spectacles of nature" because birds like to fly "under the cover of darkness." Some say we'd be astounded if we could see just how many birds are overhead at night during peak migrations. In Texas, spring peak migration starts tomorrow and goes until May 12. Help protect our feathered friends by turning out all non-essential lights outside and inside from 11 pm - 6 am every night during this time. This helps save migrating birds.
