NC lawmakers vote for Medicaid deal. It goes beyond money to fraud and immigration. - NewsBreak 04/27/2026

I was proud to speak in support of last week’s Medicaid agreement—an important step forward in ensuring North Carolina families continue to receive the healthcare they need. This includes critical services for children with autism spectrum disorder and other developmental needs.

While there are still a few adjustments to be made, this agreement moves us in the right direction. It strengthens accountability, limits opportunities for bad actors to exploit the system, and helps ensure resources reach the families who truly need them.

We’ve seen what’s possible when we act with purpose. The expansion of Medicaid Expansion in North Carolina has already helped save lives and extended coverage to more than 700,000 North Carolinians. Continuing this progress—and establishing a sustainable, recurring funding stream—must remain a top priority.

Now, we turn our focus to the next critical step: delivering a state budget that reflects these values and meets the needs of our communities.

Yesterday was a full-circle moment and a true honor.

I had the privilege of swearing in my friend of 20 years, Nate Denny, as the new Secretary of the Department of Information Technology for the State of North Carolina.

I’ve known Nate since his undergraduate days, and it’s been incredible to watch his journey—his growth, his leadership, and his unwavering commitment to public service. Your contacts will mature, and when they do, moments like this remind you just how meaningful those relationships can be.

Nate is a thoughtful leader and a dedicated public servant who understands the responsibility of this role and the opportunity it brings to move our state forward. Yesterday was not just a proud moment for him—it was a proud day for North Carolina.

Congratulations, Mr. Secretary. I’m looking forward to all that’s ahead.
