It's Pearl Harbor Day. So few of the soldiers from that day are left but may we never forget their sacrifice and call to service.

2nd Lt. Edward Watkins was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen and from Freemon, West Virginia.

On this Veterans Day 2021, we honor West Virginians who were members of the elite and we begin with the last living member of the Tuskegee Airmen from West Virginia, and one of the last surviving members of the elite unit in the nation.

Clifton E. Brooks, Sr. , born March 22, 1912, in Keyser, and enlisted September 28, 1942, at Charleston, where he was a student at . He was a cryptologist, sending out codes to keep military missions a secret.

Thank you for your service to our country, sir, during a time when segregation and discrimination kept you prisoner while you worked for the freedom of others.

West Virginia played an integral role in the training and support of the Tuskegee Airmen long before they accepted their challenging missions during World War II. Originally an "experiment" to train black aviators, the Tuskegee Airmen became one of the most celebrated squadrons in history. They earned over 100 Flying Crosses, 14 Bronze Star Medals, eight Purple Hearts, a Silver Star, Legion of Merit and three Presidential Unit Citations. They were also awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by then-President George W. Bush.

The Tuskegee Airmen never lost a plane to combat - a feat unrivaled by any other flight squadron and a testament to their uncompromising sacrifice and heroism. In addition to attacking enemy planes in the air, the Tuskegee Airmen broke down barriers of prejudice and racism throughout the country. In a time when no one believed black men could fly, the Tuskegee Airmen rose to the challenge and paved the way for military desegregation.

Happy Katherine Johnson Day! Today she would have celebrated her 103 birthday on this day.

While she left this earth in February 2020, her legacy continues here in West Virginia and around the globe. For without her, we would have never reached the moon or the stars. She was a genius mathematician that went decades without receiving the recognition she deserved as it relates to NASA and our first trips to space.

She serves as a role model for young girls here in the Mountain State, the nation, and around the globe.

Tasks:

- Parts supply at assemble machines

- May perform other duties as required

Skills and Requirements:
- Minimum education requirement of High School Diploma or GED
- Capable to lift heavy items (max weight is 50lb)
- Standing for long periods of time
- Some numerical skills
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Good team work skills

Work Schedule:
- Hours: 2:45pm to 11:30pm

1n 1892. a brave African American school teacher in Parsons, WV stood up to her local school board and sued them for discrimination. Her lawyer, J.R. Clifford, was not only a prominent civil rights activist, but also the first African American lawyer in West Virginia’s history. They were successful and won their case.
