A new Pew Research Center survey found that 46% of Catholics disapprove of Trump “very strongly,” while 13% disapprove “not so strongly.” Only 29% of Catholics “very strongly” approve of Trump, and 10% approve “not so strongly.” Overall, his net disapproval rating with this key demographic is 60%.

Compare this with the White Evangelical Protestant bloc, where 52% approve of Trump “very strongly” and only 20% disapprove “very strongly.”
Clearly, Pope Leo’s denunciations of the Trump administration’s brutal anti-immigrant policies have shifted Catholic opinion, while Evangelicals remain in lockstep with their “cult leader.” As has long been observed, the Christian right is “Christian” in name only. They reject the true teachings of Jesus in favor of greed, violence, and moral corruption. Their religiosity is a tool they wield to feel self-righteous.
It cannot be overstated how much the Catholic Church’s pushback against Trump is a direct result of Pope Leo’s bold leadership. He urged Catholic leaders in America to speak out, and they responded.
Just last week, Cardinal Robert W. McElroy, Archbishop of Washington D.C., called the “murders of Renee Good and Alex Pretti” a “profound moral failure.” Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, second-in-command at the Vatican, called Trump’s ICE crackdowns “unacceptable.” We couldn’t agree more.
