Hi all,
Tomorrow, Tuesday (9/15) is the monthly Timpanogos Grotto meeting … with another great presentation for you! THIS MEETING WILL BE at the SOUTH JORDAN library, instead of the usual location (which is closed for construction for a few months). We will also have the same Zoom option. Start time is 7pm.

We have a very exciting presentation! Get the latest & greatest cave news from the famous Tears of the Turtle expedition in Wyoming, hosted by Timp Grotto’s international cavers Chelsea Dau, Matteo Bucalossi, and the ever-charismatic Colin Stern!

Tears of the Turtle is the deepest known limestone cave in the US. Join these 3 Tears team members Tuesday to learn about the thrilling survey discoveries and years of tough caving it took to achieve this masterpiece of technical cave exploration!

Additionally, we have some important upcoming event announcements at the beginning of the meeting (hint: be on time if possible!) and we’ll also leave some time at the end for cavers of all levels to meet for connections and plans.

As usual, a good time is guaranteed for all!

This coming Tuesday August 18 is our main meeting at the Draper Library and on Zoom, at ~7pm.

We have an informative presentation relevant for members of all levels: brand new cavers, intermediate cavers, and advanced cavers!

We will of course have announcements and such -- then our main topic will be about cave maps. We will cover both improving skills for reading cave maps AND for making them from survey data (cartography). This will be helpful to a broad range of caver experience and interests!

First, we will focus on learning to read cave maps, from basic to tricky. This is a “sliding scale” skill ... it depends on the map complexity! Map skills are needed for safety and also for having a fun time finding all there is to see in established caves. It’s crucial for trip leaders, future trip leaders, and truly all participants who wish to take self-responsibility for their safety to a good extent. A discussion of what makes maps more easily readable also helps map makers refine their techniques for optimal readability. We will additionally have some tips for getting into cartography and discuss digital considerations in cartography skills.

Timp Grotto board member Rod Horrocks, who has won national-level recognition for his cave maps, will present this very interesting session. There will be plenty to please a digital audience, but a bonus of even more to gain in person with some paper maps on display, too. So, if you can swing attending in person, it’s a great meeting for show & tell. We'd love to see you either way, and a good time is assured for all!
