Discipline: The Secret Weapon Every Musician Needs
Let me be real with youâmotivation is a fleeting thing. Itâs there when the excitement is high, but what about the days when youâre exhausted? Frustrated? Feeling like progress is nowhere in sight?
Hereâs the truth: discipline is the difference-maker. Itâs the tool that separates those who dream from those who achieve.
Motivation might get you started, but discipline? Discipline keeps you going. It shows up when inspiration takes a backseat. It gets you to pick up your instrument, even when the last thing you want to do is practice.
And hereâs what most people miss: the greatest growth doesnât happen when youâre riding a wave of inspiration. It happens in those moments when youâre tired, doubting yourself, and you STILL choose to play.
---
Why Discipline Matters
Think about every musician you admireâthe ones who seem to make it look effortless. Do you know what they all have in common? Itâs not just talent. Itâs not even just hard work. Itâs discipline.
Discipline is the force that drives you to push through the challenges, to refine the details that no one else notices, and to show up for yourself, over and over again. Itâs in those seemingly âordinaryâ moments that greatness is built.
You donât become a better musician because you practiced for hours on the days you felt like it. You become a better musician because you practiced for even five minutes on the days you didnât.

Start Small, Build Big
If youâre feeling stuck or unmotivated, let me tell you this: you donât have to conquer the world today. Just take one step. Play one phrase. Work on one scale.
Because every time you push through that resistance, youâre rewiring yourself for success. Youâre proving to yourself that youâre stronger than the excuses, the doubts, or the distractions.
Those small moments? They build momentum. And that momentum is what leads to the breakthroughs that feel impossible today.
---
Itâs Time to Show Up
The question isnât whether youâll feel like practicing every day. The question is, will you show up anyway?
When you do, youâre not just playing musicâyouâre building discipline, resilience, and the kind of strength that will carry you through anything life throws at you.
So today, choose to show up. Choose to play. Not because itâs easy, but because itâs worth it.
Whatâs one small thing youâll work on today? Let me knowâIâd love to celebrate how youâre showing up for your journey.

Create an Unstoppable Learning Environment That Ignites Your Passion
Let me tell you something: if youâre serious about your growth, you have to create an environment that forces you to rise to the occasion. Itâs not enough to just show up. You need a space that fuels your passion, pushes you to break through your limits, and keeps you inspired even when the road gets tough.
Growth doesnât happen by accidentâit happens when you decide to engage with your music on a level that challenges you every single day. When you create an environment that thrives on curiosity, excitement, and resilience, you unleash unstoppable progress.
Remember, itâs not about playing the perfect note; itâs about building a foundation of relentless pursuit and taking massive action every day to move forward. Donât wait for the "perfect moment." Make your journey one of constant evolution, where every obstacle is an opportunity and every small victory drives you closer to your ultimate potential.
Nowâs your time. Are you ready to create a learning environment that fuels your fire? Letâs make it happen!

I extend my gratitude to everyone who took the time to offer birthday felicitations via phone calls, texts, and thoughtful comments on Facebook posts. đ Why I Started Teaching Music đ¶
I began my teaching journey with a simple desire: to share what I had been learning. It all started with the piano, then the saxophone, and later on, the flute and clarinet. There were so many fascinating experiences I wanted to share with friends, family, and eventually, others. As I gained confidence in my abilities and my purpose, my passion for teaching grew.
Thinking back on some core moments that shaped this journey:
â đč Playing piano for school assemblies
â đș Being first chair trumpet in elementary school bands
â đ· Discovering improvisation on the saxophone, which I had unknowingly been doing on the piano from a classical background and perspective.
â đ Performing hundreds of gigs across classical, music theater, lounge, and arts venues
â đ€ Participating in hundreds of recording sessions
â đŒ Gained 10 years of arranging experience for jazz ensembles to big bands with my mentor during and after college.
â đ Accumulating 30 years of teaching experience, ranging from studio, online, and college adjunct roles
Why Sharing This Journey Matters: I realized that school programs often don't address our unique learning styles and interests in music. The joy of music lies in exploring and developing our individuality while learning to collaborate and be a valuable contributor in group settings and ensembles.
Iâve learned to adopt certain Qualities That Helped Me Overcome Challenges:
â Embracing a continual growth mindset
â Finding smart and effective ways to practice
â Becoming musically literate and the skill of actively listening to music
â Pursuing knowledge with passion and emotion
I think it is the greatest reward: Seeing These Qualities in My Students: I love witnessing my students' progress in technique, reading, comprehension, performance, and ability to create a music practice schedule. Seeing them commit to their growth and strive for excellence is inspiring. I teach how to set those goals and guide my students on how to achieve them by taking daily and committed actions.
My Unique Teaching Philosophy? : I start with a curiosity. What does a prospective student want? Reading better? Writing? Soloing? Recording? What resources do they already have? What do they still need? How can I best present the information and activities that will lead them to their dream outcome?
I spend time with my students creating a strategic, comprehensive, and unique practice plan that my students can look forward to accomplishing. I challenge limiting beliefs about music, the performer, the audience, and the possibilities. My goal is to create enabling and empowering opportunities for learning and growth.
