Saint Rita of Cascia is an Italian Saint. She was born Rita Lotti in 1381, in Roccaporena, near Cascia, in the Province of Umbria, Italy. Her parents Antonio and Amata looked upon their only child as a very special gift from God since she was born when they were in their late 40's. They tried so hard to have a child before her birth, yet couldn't.
Rita was married at an early age to an abusive husband, who used to push and slap her. Her relationship lasted for more than 18 years, even though he was abusive. She overlooked his outbursts and prayed constantly for her husband. She also stopped her sons from trying to seek revenge against him for mistreating their mother. After her husband died, when she was only 50, she devoted her life to God and decided to remain single. She even joined a small community of nuns.
Today, St. Rita is known as the patron saint for abused women, mourning wives, and impossible causes. Many women turn to her during times of despair, after a death in the family or even after a divorce. She is often depicted in artwork and on medals in a religious sister’s habit, with roses or a rose crown. Her remains are preserved in the Church of Saint Rita in Cascia.
