Artist Warren King began sculpting with cardboard as an attempt to add fantasy to the lives of his children, creatively crafting masks and helmets out of the recyclable material. This slowly evolved into a more time-consuming arts practice as King began focusing less time on costumes, and more time making large sculptures of his own.

W***y Verginer crafts hyperrealistic chiseled wood sculptures that are equally poignant and absurdist.
Verginer’s precisely rendered sculptures variously depict children with their heads poking through cardboard boxes with branches growing from their feet, red-eyed cows whose hooves are stuck in tires, and bespectacled businessmen kneeling on top of donkeys.
Deadpan juxtapositions of contemporary industry and bucolic animal life is a common motif in his work, as is a graphic delineation in color. Verginer’s works comment on contemporary pollution and environmental degradation and implicate their human subjects as passive observers or even active contributors to this destruction.

Sculptures made of soft tufts of brightly-colored wool make up the latest series from Iranian artist Salman Khoshroo, a rumination on his experience with a case of COVID and the associated quarantine.
“Weaving inanimate fibers into faces has brought me comfort and helped with overcoming my own experience of contracting the virus. These portraits are delicate and vulnerable and resonate with my own precarious situation. We live in fragile times, and I feel the need to find new materials and the mindset to reinvent my practice. Wool brings warmth and intimacy to these portraits and plays with provoking the nurture instinct.”
