Alamo, also known as the Astor Place Cube or simply The Cube, is an outdoor sculpture by Bernard (Tony) Rosenthal, located on Astor Place, in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan in New York City. It is a black cube, 8 feet long on each side, mounted on a corner. The cube is made of Cor-Ten steel and weighs about 1,800 pounds. The faces of the cube are not flat but have various indentations, protrusions, and ledges. The sculpture's name, Alamo, is designated on a small plaque on the base and was selected by the artist's wife because its scale and mass reminded her of the Alamo Mission.

Valerie Hegarty is a Brooklyn-based artist who makes paintings, sculptures and installations that explore issues of memory, place and history. Hegarty relishes the materiality of her process and her works often incorporate a range of layered materials such as canvas, wood, Foamcore, paper-mache, and ceramics. Often starting with a personal inspiration, Hegarty seeks out poetic connections between her personal history, art history and current events. Although representational, Hegarty's works contain surprising juxtapositions and uncanny transformations where materials and meanings are constantly shifting.

Hegarty's large-scale installation work incorporates a process she calls “reverse archeology” in which layers of painted paper are adhered to the walls and floors of the gallery and then scraped back to create a material memory of a space.

Hegarty also constructs canvases and sculptures that replicate paintings and antiques from early American art history, only to falsify their ruination by devices associated with their historical significance.

Vincent Ganivet integrates everyday objects and raw construction materials into performances and assemblages. Working with elementary architectural and geometric forms—the metope, keystone, or circle—his work diverts standard materials from their everyday usage. He has used fireworks to create a mural painting, transformed a domestic water supply into a fountain, and produced monumental curvilinear structures made from concrete masonry that evoke the classical forms of arcades and arches. Ganivet’s interventions also function as maquettes through his formal explorations of scale, balance, and volume—which point to both the integrity of standard building materials and their complete fragility.

Through juggling, ripping, disassembling and then reassembling photographs, a Japanese artist Kensuke Koike creates new images with their own independent lives, just barely connected with their previous ones. As he constantly searches for a perfect image processing that would ultimately lead to a perfect collage, the artist slowly becomes an alchemist who uses everyday materials, turning them into artistic gold, showing that everything depends on our point of observation of reality and the way in which we take into consideration.

The artistic research of Michael Johansson revolves around an almost obsessive collection and measuring of objects. This process leads the artist to his creations of heterogenous conglomerates whose multivalent significance is meticulously calibrated and always differs. Forms and colors seem to be inextricably entwined, welded together by some disconcerting magnetism. For Johansson, an everyday object like a chair seat represents a metaphor for a familiar space that must be organized and filled at a very junction, interpreting the intrinsic nature of every juxtaposition.

It’s vocabulary that reminds us how mathematics and philosophy like to orbit one another. Finite and infinite, rational and irrational, predictable and unpredictable, determinate and indeterminate—these are crucial complements to French conceptual artist Bernar Venet, who employs indeterminacy as both a mathematical concept and a philosophical guidepost. His practice wavers between communicating the process of making an artwork (and its inherent uncertainty and unpredictability), and embodying that process materially.

Born in 1956 in Sint-Truiden (Belgium), Michel François lives and works between Brussels (Belgium) and Paris (France). François’s interest lies in exploring a variety of media including installation, video, sculpture and photography, often combined and linked to create a larger idea. Through these various techniques and materials, François comments on the relationships and contradictions that we face in our public and private lives. Some are more formal such as convex versus concave forms, the connection between the external and the internal, light versus dark. Others focus on political “truths” versus deception and/or manipulation. Central to the artist’s work is the reconsideration of simple known images, objects or banal iconography.
