Happy #NationalAgDay! It’s awesome to see Extension agents like Mike Parrish celebrate area farmers. Parrish facilitated the commission of portraits recognizing five Dinwiddie farmers that have been Sunbelt Farmer of the Year in the past 20 years. They were unveiled at the dedication ceremony of the new Dinwiddie administration building. “This was a great honor for our agriculture community to be recognized by the county in a public way on this day and for years to come," said Parrish. If you're looking for somewhere to plant summer vegetables, try grow bags. Grow bags are an alternative to plastic or terracotta pots and they are made of plastic fabric. Grow bags are relatively inexpensive, drain well, and are a good option for small space gardening.

To learn about the benefits of grow bags--and why you might even use them instead of a raised bed, check out this video with Chris Mullins of VSU College of Agriculture and Virginia Cooperative Extension https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=6uKqsIqXYLY

Image text:
Benefits of grow bags:
- Offers flexibility with positioning or moving plants
- Takes less soil to fill grow bags (vs. raised bed)
- Affordable (especially if you buy in bulk)
- Soil can be kept and tested/amended each year, OR changed out to suit your needs
- Good for renters or small spaces
- Drains well

Minimum bag size for common crops
Beans, bush 2 gallon
Carrots 1 quart
Cucumbers 5 gallon
Kale 5 gallon
Lettuce, leaf 0.5 gallon
Peppers 2 gallon
Radishes 1 pint
Summer squash 5 gallon
Tomatoes 5 gallon
