Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit
Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit is an internationally acclaimed youth development program that helps
Mosaic's mission is to empower young people to maximize their potential through professional performing arts training and the creation of theatrical and musical art that engages, transforms and inspires. Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, founded by Rick Sperling in 1992, was born out of a need to fill the gaps in arts education in metro Detroit schools while providing an artistic home for young ac

Inspired by the 2025 National theme, African Americans and Labor, we’re highlighting the essential role of backstage technicians and crews—the often-unsung heroes who bring performances to life.
Our Mosaic backstage tech members had the incredible opportunity to connect with Jinnah Ali, who is currently part of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE), famously known as The Union Behind Entertainment.
"I think a lot of people don’t even know this [the union] exists," remarked Jinnah. "There are people with talent in this area who don’t even know the union is there to display that talent."
Our members toured Little Caesars Arena, where Jinnah works with IATSE, and learned about his experience in the union, the career possibilities in backstage tech, and the progress made by Black union members.
Jinnah reflected on the changes he’s seen since his father, who is also involved in IATSE, first started: "You see a lot more African Americans in the business, and that’s a good thing," explained Jinnah. "But I think a lot of that comes from just accessibility. For most people, you want to be what you see. That’s why so many young people in the African-American community always say, ‘I’m going to be an athlete’ because that’s what’s easy to see... If you’re in a school and doing a program like Mosaic, you’re aware that, ‘Hey, this is something I can do as a career. I can make a financial living from what I’m currently doing in high school.’"
We are deeply grateful to Jinnah for sharing his story and offering a behind-the-scenes look at union talent in action right here in Detroit!
As we reflect this , we honor the ongoing impact of Black Americans on the workforce, culture, arts, and entertainment—both on stage and behind the scenes.

This , Mosaic proudly celebrates the innovation and contributions of African Americans throughout history and the performing arts.
Inspired by the 2025 National Black History Month theme, African Americans and Labor, we’re highlighting how labor intersects with the arts—specifically the backstage technicians and crews who bring performances to life.
Join us this month as we spotlight changemakers in labor unions supporting theatre and performing arts right here in Detroit.
As we reflect on the past, we honor the enduring legacy and ongoing impact of Black Americans on our history, culture, arts, and future.
