Detroit community,
The I-375 project remains on track, with construction expected to begin in Summer 2027 as MDOT continues final approvals and design work.
This project will transform the existing freeway into a boulevard, helping reconnect neighborhoods and create new opportunities for public space and economic growth.
Key elements include:
- Replacing the Gratiot Avenue bridge over Dequindre Cut
- Converting the I-375 and Jefferson interchange
- Building a boulevard south of Gratiot Avenue
- The project could create up to 9 acres of new land, with opportunities to restore historic connections and honor the legacy of Black Bottom and Paradise Valley.
- Community engagement will continue to guide design, land use, and future development.

Where history moved, gathered, and made champions
The Brewster-Wheeler Recreation Center isn’t just a building, it’s a legacy. From hosting legends like Joe Louis and Sugar Ray Robinson to carrying the name of Leon Wheeler, Detroit’s first African American recreation worker, this space tells a story of community, resilience, and Black excellence.
As Detroit evolves, places like this remind us what (and who) built it. What are some of your favorite Detroit culture stories?

Real progress on the ground.
Stormwater infrastructure work along the Detroit River is already underway, with major pieces completed and restoration work following behind. Next up: more improvements to support long-term environmental health and public space.
It’s not always the most visible work—but it’s the kind that makes everything else possible.

At 2014 Hastings Street, a place called Sportree’s Music Bar, once handed out souvenir photo cards to its guests.
Inside one card: two couples seated at a table, dressed for a night out, drinks poured, music playing, and a moment worth saving.
The card advertised “continuous entertainment,” records for sale, and even sandwiches at the soda bar, capturing just a glimpse of everyday life along Hastings Street.
