2. The first White House egg roll event was in 1878 under President Rutherford B. Hayes.
3. German immigrants brought the tale of Osterhase, a magical egg-laying bunny, with them to America in the 1700s. This is what many people attribute the origins of the Easter Bunny to.
4. In Switzerland, Easter eggs are said to be delivered by a cuckoo bird instead of a bunny.
5. Back when Peeps were made by hand, it took workers 27 hours to make a singular Peep!

Our final PR and communications trailblazer is Caroline Robinson Jones. A Michigan native, Jones was the first African American female vice president of a major advertising agency. Our next profile is on Carole Simpson! A graduate of the University of Michigan, Simpson is a broadcast journalist, news anchor, and author. In 1975, with NBC News, she became the first African American woman to anchor a major network newscast. She also was the first woman of color to moderate a presidential debate. In 1992, Simpson won Journalist of the Year from the National Association of Black Journalists.

Happy International Women’s Day from McConnell Communications! We’re celebrating today and throughout by spotlighting influential women in Michigan PR history. Today we’re honoring Marion Corwell-Shertzer, a trailblazer in broadcast television. Corwell-Shertzer worked for the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village, where she was involved in directing, acting, producing, and writing almost 200 educational programs, which were broadcast on television across the nation. She is also thought to be the first woman in the U.S. to write, produce, and star in her own syndicated television series. Corwell-Shertzer went on to found her own communications firm in 1985.

Happy from McConnell Communications! We’ll be celebrating some of the trailblazing women in Michigan public relations and communications history this month, starting with Fran Harris. In 1943, with a show on WWJ, Harris became the first female radio newscaster in Michigan. She also had the first woman-run television show in Michigan. From 1971 until 1973, Harris was the national president of the Association for Women in Communications.
Our final PR trailblazer is Symone D. Sanders-Townsend. Known as a champion for women of color, Sanders-Townsend is a political strategist and commentator. At the age of 25, she became the youngest national press secretary in history with her work on Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign. She also worked as a senior advisor for President Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign and was named chief spokesperson and senior advisor for Vice President Kamala Harris. Sanders-Townsend is currently the host of MSNBC's The Weekend.

Our next African American PR pioneer is John Harold Johnson! Johnson was the founder, chairman, and CEO of Johnson Publishing Company, which created Ebony and Jet magazines. In 1996, Johnson was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. He is regarded as the most influential African American publisher in American history.

McConnell Communications is celebrating the African American pioneers of PR this ! Our next PR professional we’re spotlighting is Joseph Varney Baker. Baker began his career as a reporter at the Philadelphia Tribune, a Black-owned newspaper that is still being published today. After leaving his position as city editor for the Tribune, Baker started work as a public relations consultant. This led to him founding his own firm in 1934. Joseph V. Baker and Associates was the first Black-owned PR firm, and it specialized in PR, marketing, and advertising specifically aimed at Black audiences.
To celebrate , McConnell Communications will be sharing information on a few of the influential African American figures in public relations and communications history! Our first profile is on Dr. Jesse J. Lewis, Sr. A man of many accomplishments, Lewis was a WWII veteran, college president, advertising executive, newspaper publisher, and author. Lewis is best known for opening the door for people of color in the advertising and marketing industry. He started the first Black-owned advertising agency in 1954. In 1963, he founded the first weekly Black-oriented newspaper.
