It’s a Bird… It’s a Plane… It’s… the host of Iron Chef Detroit Towers!
On the Detroit airwaves since 1999, Jay Towers is a Superman enthusiast who plays multiple roles in real life.
You can hear Jay every weekday morning on his @100.3 WNIC radio show Jay Towers in the Morning and you can see him co-anchor FOX 2 Detroit News Mornings. Unlike Clark Kent, Jay doesn’t even need a phone booth!
Cass couldn’t be more excited to have such an iconic Detroit media personality hosting our inaugural Iron Chef Detroit event.
Joining Jay on the commentary team will be his Fox 2 Detroit colleague (and esteemed “ ”) Alan Longstreet and beloved Detroit food influencer Carlos Parisi.
Alan Longstreet is an actor and a board-certified meteorologist on Fox 2 News Mornings. Alan, a west Michigan native, has been forecasting on Fox 2 since 2012. In addition to meteorology, Longstreet has also had notable roles in a number of feature films including: Kid Brother (2017), Always (2022) and A Holiday I Do (2023).
Carlos Parisi is a multi-faceted Detroit food influencer, entrepreneur and TV host. As the owner of Aunt Nee’s, Carlos is one of Eastern Market Partnership’s most familiar faces and also sits on their Board of Directors. As a television host, Parisi has had prominent placements on major networks, including Max’s "What Am I Eating?" with Deschanel and PBS’ award-winning FLY BROTHER docuseries hosted by Ernest White II.
Our volunteers from Traverse City made the big screen at Comerica Park tonight. What a fun and hard-working group.
🚨ANNOUNCEMENT
We are incredibly proud to announce the two chefs who will be competing for the inaugural Iron Chef Detroit crown on Thursday, June 13 at Eastern Market - Shed 5.
Both chefs have an incredibly admirable and impressive list of credentials…but more importantly, both chefs are extremely dedicated to the cause that motivates Iron Chef Detroit: FEEDING OUR HUNGRY NEIGHBORS!
Please meet Chef Shanel DeWalt and Chef Anthony Lombardo and join us on June 13th to see who the first chef will be to earn the title of Iron Chef Detroit Champion!
- Shanel DeWalt is an award-winning culinary force to be reckoned with from the eastside of Detroit. Currently serving as the Culinary Director of Make Food Not Waste, where she leads two upcycling kitchens, she is also the co-founder of Break’n Cornbread, a cultural pop-up dining experience that is centered around the celebration of Black Food. You can see Chef Shanel shine on a recent episode of the legendary Food Network competition series Chopped.
- Anthony Lombardo is the co-owner and executive chef of the award-winning Italian restaurant SheWolf Pastificio & Bar. He is a two-time James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef who has guided SheWolf to many awards, including Hour Detroit’s Restaurant of the Year in 2020. Chef Anthony developed many of his skills working as a butcher in Italy and he’s led a plethora of world-class kitchens, including: 1789 Restaurant, Galileo Ristorante and The Hamilton in Washington D.C., Bacco Ristorante in Southfield, Ristorante Villa Maiella in Guardiagrele, Italy and the four-star, five-diamond Everest Room in Chicago.
A reminder that many people are living with mental health issues.
Our college and graduate interns were presented with letters from President Biden that recognized the critical role social workers play in our country. These four students have served us well and have taught us as much as they learned at Cass.
Kyle, Walid, Michael, Nana, Taylor and Parker presented their capstone Master of Science/Master of Landscape Architecture (Environment and Sustainability) project to the agency's leadership this morning. (University of Michigan Professor DuRussel joined them.) Their work included research and strategies for economic development, ecological health, opportunities for clean energy. and partnerships. The document is simply incredible. Thank you all.
We are sorry to announce the passing of long-time Cass staff member Gladys Ferguson. There will be a memorial service and luncheon in her honor at Cass Church (3901 Cass Avenue, Detroit) on Saturday, May 4th, starting at 2 p.m.
Members of the Cass Kim's Center recognized National Child Abuse Prevention Month today. They reminded us all to keep children safe.

Central Michigan's Leadership Institute brought 38 students to volunteer this morning. One group helped bale cardboard and paper for recycling. A second team handled landscaping in front of Scott. The final group assisted Rev. Fowler cleaning out hundreds of nasty, drenched diapers from the new Intern House - singing all the while. Fire up, Chips!
Did you know that Cass is sponsoring its first Iron Chef competition on June 13? Two powerhouse chefs will be vying for the prize. Come judge for yourself.
