At Community & Home Supports, Inc., we believe that serving a community goes beyond the work we do each day—it’s about giving back in meaningful ways that uplift others. This holiday season, we had the pleasure of partnering with our incredible interns to volunteer at Anderson’s Transitional Home for Girls during their Christmas Toy Drive.

It was a humbling and heartwarming experience to witness the joy and gratitude on the faces of those we served. Moments like these remind us why our work matters and how even the smallest acts of kindness can have a lasting impact. Giving back strengthens the very community we are dedicated to supporting, fostering hope and connection where it’s needed most.

We are grateful for opportunities like this to step outside of our daily routines, roll up our sleeves, and make a difference. A special thank you to Ms. Carolyn of Anderson's, and our interns for their dedication and compassion—it was truly a team effort to spread holiday cheer.

Our Youth Homelessness Demonstration Program (YHDP) here at Community and Home Supports, Inc. (CHS) aims to address and prevent youth homelessness by offering tailored support and resources. YHDP focuses on young people facing housing instability and provides a range of services designed to promote stability, personal growth, and independence. Through partnerships with local organizations and continuous collaboration, CHS ensures that youth experiencing homelessness have access to safe housing, mental health resources, education, employment opportunities, and supportive case management. The program aligns with CHS’s mission to create sustainable change by empowering youth to transition successfully into adulthood.

Lydia Goodard, the YHDP Coordinator at Community and Home Supports, Inc., leads a dedicated team of three, (Erica Dowdell-Parnell, Christine Szabo, and Adaijah McCowin) in effectively supporting Detroit’s homeless youth. Through focused outreach navigation, mobile assessment navigation, and shelter navigation, Lydia and her team connect youth with essential resources and stable housing options. Their collaborative approach and proactive strategies ensure that vulnerable youth have access to safe spaces, personalized support, and the guidance they need to work toward independence and stability.

Let’s continue to ensure that our vulnerable youth has a safe place to sleep, and resources to make their transition as smooth as possible.

Community and Home Supports, Inc. (CHS) is excited to announce that on September 17th, we collaborated with Ford Cares, to beautify the outdoor grounds of our Simon House apartment building, after receiving a $10, 000 Ford Cares grant. This project was aimed at transforming the outdoor space into a welcoming and vibrant area where residents, many of whom were previously homeless, can relax and enjoy time with friends, family, and fellow neighbors.

Simon House has long been a cornerstone in the CHS mission to provide stable housing and supportive services to individuals and families facing homelessness. With the support of Ford Cares, this beautification project will not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the property but also create a safe, communal space that encourages connection and fellowship among residents.

The project included landscaping improvements, the addition of seating areas, and the creation of a small recreational space for residents to gather and enjoy outdoor activities. CHS and Ford Cares believe that creating a comfortable, inviting environment is essential to helping individuals feel a sense of belonging and stability as they transition into their new lives.

John Stoyka, CEO of Community and Home Supports, Inc., expressed his gratitude, saying, "This collaboration with Ford Cares will significantly enhance the living experience at Simon House. We are grateful for their partnership in helping us create an outdoor space that fosters community and supports the well-being of the Simon House residents."

Through this initiative, CHS and Ford Cares are committed to making a meaningful impact on the lives of Simon House residents, reinforcing the importance of safe, beautiful spaces in the journey toward stability and healing.

Our Story

Imagine it is a weekday morning in the winter. Your alarm buzzes you awake, your spouse/partner/guest remains in the warm bed, while you put on your slippers and begin the process of getting ready for your day of feeding the children/driving carpool/getting ready for work. You put on your suit/uniform, prepare your lunch, ensure that everyone has everything necessary for the day, before trooping out to the car to join the day’s activities.

This is the life we imagine.

Now, you’re awakening on a cot when someone turns on the glaring overhead fluorescent lights. You share a “bedroom” with 20 people, all of whom jump up, vying for the “good” toilet.

Your clothes are in a ripped garbage bag, and your breakfast is industrial-strength oatmeal and scrambled eggs.

No slippers, no spouse in the warm bed, no driving the children to school.

No car.

You leave an hour early to take two buses to get to the job you could get …. You are saving to be able to put down first month’s rent and a security deposit so you can reunite your family. But how? When do you have time to deal with the Dept. of Human Services, landlords, Medicaid?

May I introduce you now to Community & Home Supports?
