Architect Paolo Nicolai defines himself as a “microplastic designer.” While his works of art are inspired by classical art, he is contemporary in his use of unconventional material: recycled plastic. His passion for this material comes from his interest in recycling and reusing environmentally polluting substances.

Within the exposition, there are four artworks displayed: Sileno, Divinità in Atarassi, Cavallo di Selene, and Venere ultrapop.

Since 1963, Rivierasca Spa has produced polyester laminates reinforced with fiberglass. Aiming for low-impact environmental disposal of fiberglass, the company researched and created Glebanite®.

This process has been studied thanks to a research project in cooperation with the Polytechnic of Milan, SmartLab laboratories of Lecco, and private partner GS4C. Glebanite® is obtained from recycling processes that see fiberglass waste blended with resins and other fiberglasses. The quality of the product enables its application in very varied functional and design projects.

Smeg, whose Italian acronym stands for Smalterie Metallurgiche Emiliane Guastalla, is an Italian multinational company that produces household appliances.

Founded in 1948 by Vittorio Bertazzi, this business began as a glazing and metalworking company. In the 1950s, together with its metal processing activities, the company began producing the first household cooking appliances. One of these was the 1956 “Elisabeth,” the first gas cooker to feature automatic ignition, safety valves in the oven, and a cooking programmer.

Through the decades, Smeg has received numerous important awards and honors from relevant institutions and magazines worldwide, thanks to its deep commitment to quality and design.

Parmesan cheese embodies a unique and extraordinary journey through a 1000-year-old tradition that still occurs in the same iconic places, with the same ingredients, and most definitely with the same passion.

During the Middle Age, Cistercian and Benedectine monks were the first producers of Parmesan cheese, given that they were motivated to make a cheese that could last over time.

Today, Parmesan cheese has been recognized with a PDO (Protected Denomination of Origin) logo, which protects it, given that it is the most counterfeit and copied cheese in the world.

Grivel was the first company in the world to create specific products for alpinism. In , we had: The “Machine”(a Grivel ice axe that deeply transformed the design of technical tools), Grivel crampons (which solve the issues of piled snow under the crampons with the use of the first proactive anti-balling plate), and “Twin Gate,” the first carabiner with two counterposed openings. In 2014, this carabiner was awarded a “Compasso d’Oro” Prize that, for the first time in its history, was awarded to an outdoor item.

After its foundation in 1949 by Giulio Castelli, Kartell has been the protagonist of a fundamental intuition: bringing plastic into the home, having it never showcased in the domestic domain.

Suddenly, everyday items became practical, colorful, and enjoyable to simplify domestic life. In 1988, the company was acquired by Claudio Luti, who called international designers and architects to collaborate with him to deliver products that became brand symbols. The turning point came after years of research and innovation, which led Kartell to become the first manufacturer to use polycarbonate to produce furnishings in 1999.

In , Kartell is represented by a table set composed of Philippe Starck’s Master chairs, along with Ludovica+Roberto Palomba’s BeBop Gold Edition armchair.

Since 1956, ADI has brought together researchers, teachers, journalists, critics, enterprises, and designers in all design sectors, such as concepts and training, consumption, and recycling. It is also a key factor in developing industrial design as a cultural and economic phenomenon.

Founded in 1954, the “Compasso d’Oro” Prize is the oldest and most prestigious award for international designers. It is born out of an idea of Gio Ponti, and for many years since its creation, it has been awarded by the department store “la Rinascente.” Since being awarded such a prize, 1958 ADI has been taking care of the awarding ceremony, thus supervising the criteria of impartiality and integrity of the competition. Moreover, an original prize is shown in the exposition.

With the decree of April 22nd, 2004, the Historical Collection of the “Compasso d’Oro” Prize has been recognized as having “exceptional historical and artistic interest” by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage.

Born as a little workshop in 1962 in Merano (Venice), Flos was founded by Dino Gavina and Cesare Cassina, and it soon saw the joining of two designers and brothers, Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni, along with Tobia Scarpa (all ). Initially, it was intended to experiment with new materials and new stylistic and functional applications, but after 50 years, Flos keeps unveiling new ideas and emotions thanks to its lighting items.

Since the beginning, Flos has been creating design icons that have been shown all around the globe, like the ones showcased at the MoMa in New York and LoveITDetroit!

Flos is a company that portrays itself at the edge of different worlds, such as art and design, between craftsmanship and industrial manufacturing, limited editions and mass production, and individual and community-oriented thinking. In this context, the company continuously redefines the language of lightning by always looking for new visions and emotions, such as vital freedom.

In we showcased two of the most iconic works of the company: the Arco and the Superloon. The first was designed by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni in 1962 (which received the ADI “Compasso d’Oro” Prize in 2020), and the second is the product of the creativity of Jasper Morrison, who designed it in 2015.

In 1948, a young Giuseppe Marenzi and his wife Alessandra Diana had a great intuition for starting a new business: you could now treat cotton using castor oil from decommissioned warplanes. From the beginning, with the typical sense of urgency and enthusiasm of post-war Italy, Herno’s vocation was focused on innovation and experimentation,. In 1968, Herno had already established itself in the Japanese market with two boutiques in Osaka and Tokyo. Soon after, in the early 1980s, Herno arrived in the United States.

Today, Herno is in LoveItDetroit with an Amelia Jacket, an extra-light puffer jacket from its women’s collection that weighs only 7,05 oz (200 gr). The injection-molded padding in very fine goose down and the nylon create a silky effect that makes the garment almost impalpable.

For more than two centuries, Manifattura Ginori has cultivated a unique, extraordinary obsession: beauty. Its history begins in 1735 in Doccia, a little village near Florence. Inspired by his passion for white gold, the Marquis Carlo Andrea Ginori starts an industry of porcelain that is destined to become a stylistic icon worldwide.

Today, the tradition of this Florence Maison is still the same: transforming porcelain into beauty.

From 1923 to 1933, the artistic management of the Manifattura was led by Gio Ponti. In those years, new innovative elements were introduced by the Master himself, and LoveITDetroit had a plate selection designed by this luminary.

In 2013, the Manifattura Ginori is acquired by Gucci, and the artistic direction is given to Alessandro Michele.
