The day I got that phone call, my life was changed forever.

The voice on the other end said, “We don’t think she’s going to make it.”

They were talking about my mother. I had just seen her 30 minutes before, and everything seemed fine. All of a sudden, the future, the memories, the parties, the life you thought you were going to have is ripped out from underneath you, and you learn a very hard lesson that life is too short.

I can’t believe it’s been 33 years since you’ve been gone. My heart is with you every day.

Your memory reminds me that every day should be play. I can still hear your laughter. I can still see you doing that weird butt waddle thing across the floor to clean it so that you could get some exercise.

Here’s what losing her taught me:

When someone you love is ripped away without warning, you realize that “someday” is a lie we tell ourselves to feel safe.

My mom didn’t get a someday. And watching her leave this earth at a moment’s notice made me promise myself something: I would never waste my life doing things that didn’t light me up.

That’s why I built a jewelry business. That’s why I left corporate. That’s why I’ve spent the last two decades teaching other creatives to do the same.

Because life is too damn short to spend it making someone else’s dream come true while yours sits on a shelf collecting dust.

If you’re reading this and you’ve been waiting for permission... this is it.

Permission to start. Permission to pivot. Permission to play.

My mom embodied fun. She found joy in the smallest, silliest things. She didn’t wait for life to be perfect to enjoy it. And every single day, I try to honor her by doing the same.

So today, on the anniversary of her death, I’m not just mourning. I’m celebrating. Celebrating the fact that she taught me how to LIVE before she left.
