Grefe & Sidney Attorneys Recognized in The American Lawyer’s “Litigator of the Week” Column:

Guy Cook, Pat McNulty, and Stella Maris Strohman represented Cedar Rapids Development Group in a challenge to the approval of a $275 million casino project in Cedar Rapids. After the Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission granted a gambling license to Cedar Rapids Development Group and Linn County Gaming Association for the construction of the Cedar Crossing Casino, Riverside Casino & Golf Resort and Washington County Riverboat Foundation appealed the agency’s decision. Iowa District Court Judge Michael Schilling found in a 76-page decision that the opponents to the Cedar Rapids casino failed to show that the Iowa Racing & Gaming Commission’s decision was an error of law, unreasonable, arbitrary, capricious, or an abuse of discretion. The Grefe & Sidney team, and Kirkland & Ellis co-counsel Mark Holscher and Austin Norris, received a shout-out in The American Lawyer’s “Litigator of the Week” for their client’s success.

Grefe & Sidney's attorneys Ben Erickson and Rachel Morgan recently obtained a favorable jury verdict on behalf of their client. The lawsuit stemmed from allegations Plaintiff had suffered a debilitating neck, back, and shoulder injury. At trial, Erickson and Morgan admitted liability, but disputed the nature and extent of the claimed injuries. During the trial, Plaintiff claimed past medical expenses of over $30,000, as well as lost wages. After presenting multiple witnesses, including medical expert testimony, Plaintiff asked the jury to award him over $500,000 in past and future damages.

After approximately three hours of deliberation, the jury awarded $55,088.40 in total damages.

G&S attorneys grabbing lunch at Tumea & Sons!

Congratulations to Grefe & Sidney Attorneys Andy Hall and Ben Erickson for successfully defending a local veterinarian in a jury trial last week.

The case arose out of a high-speed collision in which Plaintiffs claimed damages from a shattered knee cap and broken wrist, resulting in multiple surgical procedures and hardware placement. Over $400,000.00 was offered to settle the case before proceeding to trial. After hearing testimony from eight witnesses, including two medical experts, the jury returned a total verdict of $140,000.00.

Grefe & Sidney competing at the Orchard Place Spelling Bee to raise funds for adolescent mental health treatment.

Our firm's Dariann Garrison Nickerson recently volunteered at the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Expungement Clinic. At the clinic, Dariann was able to assist clients in helping get their records expunged. For the first time, Drake Criminal Clinic law students represented clients in mini-expungement hearings, and their records were expunged in real time. Over 35 Iowans received assistance from Iowa Legal Aid and volunteer attorneys. Additionally, clients were able to access mental health services, voter registration assistance, and job information.
