Do you ever show up to something and wonder why you are there? Connecting to those around us can be as valuable as the content of the program.

Portable Challenge programming works to focus on connection before content to build a stronger more effective team. It invites participants to CREATE their program, not just be a recipient. Connect people to each other because without relatedness, no work can occur.

A huge thank you to and who delivered 40 cubic yards of mulch (3 dump trucks) to Stowe Heights! On Friday, they showed up with crews to move the mulch and clean up around the course as we get ready to open for the 2022 season.

Can't say enough about our conversations on the course and their efforts in Des Moines. A member of the team has even joined Community Youth Concepts to become a career based mentor!

Portable Challenge programming is perfect for winter in Iowa! One week you can be outside taking advantage of the sunshine and move indoors the next week when there is a surprise snow storm.

"Gutterball" (pictured below) is a favorite go to challenge for groups. It requires focus, communication, problem solving, patience and more.

This video gives one example of a Giant Swing. Every course is designed specific to location with engineered adaptations, however, this video shares the concept. The Giant Swing provides an experience for participants to navigate and make valuable personal decisions, learning more about themselves in the process. The metaphors are rich for empowerment and leadership around the choice to jump or not. This is a crucially important aspect to challenge course programming. Creating opportunities and providing the supports to choose what is best for individuals within a team.

This has been a theme this year and it has been so fun to watch. “Not what I thought it was going to be”

It is not uncommon for group members to show up to a program not knowing exactly what they are getting into and feeling skeptical.

At the end of today’s program, the group was asked to pick a photo together that represented where they were as a group at the start of the day and where they ended.

They expressed surprise that this wasn’t what they thought it would be and how much they learned about each other and engaged. They went from “closed” and “locked” to “we can”.

The outdoor season has come to a close, but Portable Challenges programming runs all year long.
