Larry McMurtry originally intended for John Wayne to play Woodrow Call, James Stewart to play Gus McCrae and Henry Fonda to play Jake Spoon. Ten years later, he got a vastly different cast, one that uplifted his project into what many consider to be the greatest miniseries of all time. The cowboys of Lonesome Dove left to right: Robert Urich (back to the camera), Timothy Scott, Tommy Lee Jones, D.B. Sweeney, Robert Duvall, Danny Glover and Ricky Schroeder.

This ca. 1892 photo depicts the great silver rush at the Jimtown section of Creede, Colorado. The original settlement of Creede spanned several miles from the mouth of Willow Gulch and up the narrow canyon to where the rich silver mines were located.

The Texas Rangers are arguably the most famous law enforcement agency in U.S. history, and they certainly made their mark in the Old West. It took special men to put on a Ranger badge—“men of fiber,” as historian J. Evetts Haley put it. The job was tough, sometimes boring, occasionally dangerous. It tested men to the utmost. Yet, sadly, many of the Rangers of old have been nearly forgotten by history.

Seated side by side in this iconic image are two towering legends of the American Old West: James Butler “Wild Bill” Hickok, gripping his rifle on the right, and William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody, adorned in feathered attire with long hair on the left. Both men embodied the spirit of a frontier era filled with danger, opportunity, and larger-than-life stories. Hickok, known for his exceptional sharpshooting and steady nerves, served as a Union spy during the Civil War and upheld the law in rough Kansas towns like Hays City and Abilene, earning a reputation as one of the West’s most formidable lawmen.
Buffalo Bill Cody, whose nickname came from his days hunting buffalo to feed railroad crews, transformed from scout and hunter into an international showman. His wildly popular “Buffalo Bill’s Wild West” show brought thrilling reenactments and frontier legends to audiences across America and Europe, shaping how the world imagined the Old West. What many might not know is that these two icons actually crossed paths professionally—Hickok briefly joined Cody’s theatrical production “Scouts of the Plains” in 1873, the very year this photograph was taken, capturing a rare moment of collaboration between two legendary men.
Their intertwined stories helped build the mythology of the American frontier, blending fact with fiction in dime novels and popular culture. Both Hickok and Cody became immortalized as symbols of courage, adventure, and the untamed West—figures whose legacies continue to captivate imaginations and define a pivotal chapter in American history.
