Precision Above the Patio: The Art of Rigging Branches Over Pergolas

Not all tree work is created equal.

When large branches stretch over pergolas, patios, outdoor kitchens, and carefully landscaped backyards, simply cutting and dropping limbs isn't an option. Every piece must be controlled, calculated, and lowered with precision to protect the structures and spaces beneath.

Today's project challenged our crew to safely remove heavy limbs hanging directly above a beautiful pergola patio. One mistake could have damaged the structure, shattered outdoor furniture, or caused costly repairs. Instead, we relied on professional rigging techniques to safely lower every piece exactly where we wanted it.

Rigging is one of the most technical aspects of tree care. It involves ropes, pulleys, friction devices, communication between crew members, and years of experience understanding how wood behaves under tension and compression. Every branch has its own weight distribution, balance point, and potential movement once it's cut free.

As climbers, we don't just cut trees—we engineer solutions. Before making the first cut, we evaluate branch weight, anchor points, swing paths, and landing zones. The goal is complete control from start to finish.

Many homeowners don't realize the amount of planning that goes into removing a tree over valuable property. What looks like a simple branch hanging over a patio often requires advanced rigging systems and a highly coordinated crew to remove safely.

At Colorado Native Tree Care, we take pride in protecting our clients' homes, landscapes, and outdoor living spaces while performing some of the most challenging removals in the industry. Whether it's a pergola, fence, roof, greenhouse, or prized garden, our mission remains the same: remove the risk while leaving everything else untouched.

Projects like these are a reminder that professional tree care isn't just about strength—it's about skill, precision, and respect for the property we're trusted to work around.

Do you have a tree like this?

There’s something deeply satisfying about taking a dangerous situation and turning it into peace of mind.
Today’s project was all about removing old, dead trees that had been looming over a home—dry, brittle, and one good windstorm away from causing real damage. These are the kinds of jobs that matter most. Not just for the look of a property, but for the safety of the people living in it.
Dead trees don’t just “stand there.” They crack, they shift, they drop limbs without warning. When they’re hanging over a house, it’s not a matter of if—it’s when. Getting them safely off the structure takes planning, precision, and a solid crew that knows how to work together under pressure.
And that’s something I’ve been especially grateful for lately—the help we’ve been able to find. Building a strong team in this line of work isn’t easy, but having people who show up, work hard, and take pride in doing things the right way makes all the difference.
That said, we’re still growing.
As we head into spring, Colorado Native Tree Care is looking to bring on more good people—folks who aren’t afraid of hard work, who respect the craft, and who want to be part of something that’s built on skill, trust, and doing right by the customer. Whether it’s on the ground, behind the wheel, or up in the canopy, there’s a place here for the right person.
Days like today are a reminder of why we do what we do. Protecting homes, improving properties, and leaving things better than we found them.
If you’re looking for a team to grow with this season, we’re hiring.

Pro tip: Get your trees trimmed now before the leaves come back that way it's easier on your trees to come back healthy this spring and before the wind damaged trees are deformed and susceptible to infestations and disease!
