This was the first year the Stanley Cup and NCAA Championship Trophy were raised in the same arena in the same year. Denver Hockey, then Carolina Hurricanes, at T-Mobile Arena. The only previous time they were raised in the same state was 1991 in Minnesota at the Saint Paul Civic and Met centers. 📸 DU Clarion and Carolina Hurricanes

When it comes to places I’ve stayed while announcing horse shows around the country, it’s going to be hard to top The Gowdy House in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The Airbnb is the childhood home of Curt Gowdy, and you can imagine how geeked out I was, as a sports announcer, to stay there while announcing The Spring Event at Archer. Here’s my quick tour of the house, and this is an excerpt about Gowdy by the Society for American Baseball Research.

“In a career spanning more than 40 years, Curt Gowdy became recognized as one of the top sportscasters in broadcasting history. Broadcaster Red Barber wrote in 1970, “In my measured opinion, the greatest television sports announcer of today is Curt Gowdy. He is the best man on football, baseball, basketball, track, winter or summer Olympics, or fishing. He has amazing versatility and authority.” Providing the play-by-play description of such great baseball moments as Ted Williams’ final home run, covering many World Series games, Super Bowls, as well as memorable Olympic events, Curt Gowdy was the voice of sports for the middle part of the 20th century.”

Dos has always been eager to show off his athleticism in eventing and has turned some heads as an Arabian racehorse in the sport. We’re now working on progressing with a more solid foundation. As that has clicked, and often happens in equine sports and did at our most recent show, the result and score don’t reflect that’s the case. However, more importantly, I’m appreciating the journey more. For that, I have a lot for which to thank Ashley of Super G Sporthorses LLC. She has trained Dos on and off the track, and she’s taught me how to ride. I’m grateful for the riding and life lessons.

It’s been cool to become horse show friends with Sibelius and his team. After covering his racing career, I’ve now competed at the three shows where he’s begun his eventing career with . Here’s my Race-bred Arabian AA Two Face meeting the Dubai Golden Shaheen champ at the .

We now have a bush hog for our tractor, and I was able to mow one of our big pastures. It’s wonderful how things are coming together in Virginia.

Ashley and I enjoyed our much-needed getaway to Vegas and took in the game where VGK clinched the Western Conference Finals and a berth to the Stanley Cup Finals. We had the pleasure to meet PA announcer before the game and sit with our good friend . They definitely brought the energy at , and Ashley pointed out it’s the closest thing she’s seen to a nightclub outside of… a nightclub.

We weren’t at T-Mobile Arena when Denver Hockey won, but we did see a trophy presented at our first game there. Congratulations to the Vegas Golden Knights. Denver’s NCAA and NHL teams both had their seasons end in Vegas. Different emotions, still it’s the standard that they’re always contenders.

Sibelius is taking to eventing with the same confidence he had on the track. The winner of the 2023 Dubai Golden Shaheen and five US stakes finished 2nd of 14 at Novice level (2’11”) with Sydney Hagaman at Hunt Club Farms HT on Preakness Day. He made the jumping look effortless.

The popular chestnut got his sporthorse foundation from Alison O’Dwyer, wife of race trainer Jerry O’Dwyer. He’s still owned by Delia Nash. I wrote about his new career in “One Day, Three Shining ‘Wins’ For The Off-Track Thoroughbred” for Paulick Report.
