This jester holds a mask with a happy face, but her expression tells another story.🎭

Jesters are quite intriguing, embodying a duality that I find so fascinating!
Something I learned about jesters is that they inhabited a strangely unique social position; they were inside society but outside its rules, were low status yet unusually free, ridiculous on the surface, but perceptive underneath (you kind of have to be to tell effective jokes or be quippy, especially when you had a king and nobles to impress).

Did you know that the court jester was often allowed to criticize power indirectly? By acting foolish, the jester could speak dangerous truths without triggering the same retaliation that a serious critic would face. The fool’s costume was almost a license or badge for honesty.
