✨𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐚 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭✨I was on the water in my solo canoe well before sunrise, launching around 5:00 a.m. to catch the early fog. In the Michigan summer, the light comes fast, and if you want those quiet, misty moments, you have to be out there early.

That morning, I was drifting and paddling slowly, looking for whatever the lake might offer, loons, cranes, or just the shapes and layers that the fog creates.

After an hour or two, I noticed something faint in the distance. At first, it barely registered, just a shape in the mist. As it moved closer, it took on form: a small fishing boat, emerging quietly, almost like something out of a dream.

For a few moments, it felt a little eerie, like a ghost boat appearing out of nowhere. Then, as I paddled by, it became fully real, just another person out early on the water, sharing the same quiet morning. And then just as quickly, it was gone in the fog.
