I have a film suggestion that you might not have seen before: Ruby in Paradise! The 1993 drama Ruby in Paradise proves itself to be a classic that young audiences from all generations can relate to, by showing the highs and lows of becoming independent for the first time. Director Victor Nunez is able to create a heartwarming yet realistic story that centers around the journey of Ruby as she experiences several seasons of her life in her new home of Panama City, Florida, while struggling with self-discovery.There is no cliche love story ending, it is rather an inspirational story about women helping women that leaves the audience feeling refreshed. The talented ensemble cast is led by a young Ashley Judd (in her film debut!), and this film’s influence can be seen in countless others that followed it, and can be compared to films such as Boyhood and Eighth Grade. The film can be found on a number of streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime!

In his first few months on campus, first year Thatcher Pitkoff has already become an integral member of the Davidson College Jazz Ensemble, Brass Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra. Hailing from Brooklyn, NY, Thatcher first started playing the piano at age five. He began playing the tuba in his 6th grade band class, and later picked up the trombone.

Because music has always been an important part of his life, he knew it would be a part of his career at Davidson. Sure enough, he now plays trombone and tuba in three ensembles and hopes to minor in music. He especially loves playing jazz and also enjoys composing his own music!

In addition to music, Thatcher is involved with the Davidson College Department of Theatre, where he takes acting classes and serves as the lighting apprentice for shows. He is also a member of the club volleyball team and is considering majoring in math.

You can see Thatcher playing with the Jazz Ensemble this Friday at 9pm during their fall concert in Tyler Tallman Hall. The concert is free and Thatcher will be a featured soloist on the bass trombone, so don’t miss your chance to see this phenomenal musician in action!

Over the last decade, our productions have won several theatre awards from the Metrolina Theatre Association and Creative Loafing magazine. We balance the highest quality production values with material that is courageous in its content, form and ex*****on. To support our work, we have two new state-of-the-art facilities: The Cunningham Theatre Center (renovated in 2008) and The Duke Family Performance Hall (built in 2000).
