For the past few years, our storm seasons have been shaped by La Niña or neutral conditions. This year is different. We now have a strong, rapidly developing El Niño, with some even calling it a “Super El Niño.”
The good news? El Niño creates a vertical wind shear that usually makes it harder for storms to organize in the Atlantic and Caribbean.
The bad news? The Gulf Coast often plays by its own rules. Gulf waters are already running about 1°–3° warmer than normal, and warm water is hurricane fuel. That means storms that sneak into or form in the Gulf can ramp up in a hurry and put the coastal areas of TX, LA, MS, AL, and FL in the crosshairs.
Bottom line: Fewer storms doesn’t always mean lower risk. Remember: It only takes one.
