Right now, SoCal is in low humidity, high wind conditions. Obviously feeding wildfires, it can also drastically change an instrument’s action as the wood in the neck and top shrink or even crack, especially in acoustic instruments. Humidity control products abound. In these conditions, coastal SoCal musicians pay heed.

“Suddenly, my guitar is buzzing like mad”. When we get low humidity from our Santa Ana winds, the neck can dry out and “backbow” the neck. It will then buzz on frets 2-5 or 7, then stop on higher frets. It can be dramatic. Temporary solution is to ease the truss rod slightly, but return to original position when ambient humidity returns to 50%-ish. Best solution is to use humidity control tools to keep the guitar within 40-60% relative humidity. Humidity is important. Too high or too low wreaks havoc on acoustics and some electrics. Best to all. Happy Holiday season. MM

I’ve been laying bass with Tristin Shiells’ band, with Dave Pinkerton on drums and Lee Martel on lead. We are playing at the Rib Joint in Dana Point tomorrow night, July 21 from about 7 to 9. Tristin is a great songwriter and most of the set list is originals. Her music is sampled on her FB account at Tristin Shiells Music. Come on down for some not classic rock listening

I've been playing bass with Tristin Shiells (Tristin Sheills Music on FB), Dave Pinkerton (drums) and Lee Martel (lead) and we have a Rib Joint gig coming up this Friday, July 21 from about 7 to 9PM. Come down to enjoy Tristin's great original songs, and Neda's great BBQ and full bar.

1962 Ampeg B-15 Fliptop classic bass amp restoration project. I work on amps selectively because they are so time consuming and expensive, but this beaut was well worth the effort. Very rewarding to restore that unique growl. Tubes, caps, burnt out resistors, reroute and redesign wiring paths to repair dangerous prior mods and convert to. 3 prong power cord. Lots of fun. I had one at 16, loved it. MM

Fender pro series common problem. 1/8”truss rod nut stripped and/or ran out of threads on the rod. Have to replace the nut and reposition it for max adjustability. Here are pics of the repair process. Basically rebuild the truss rod nut assembly and access and install a new bi-flex rod system walnut end plug Fun. Time consuming

Greg Richardson’s pro series “Blackie” strat’s bi-flex truss rod nut was stripped and needed replacement. These are real stinkers because that walnut plug is integral to this bi-flex system. It has to be replaced and the new one custom-fitted. Not easy but worth it if you want these guitars to set up and play like they should, smooth as silk and soft as butter

If u have a strat with this style of truss rod, using a very small 1/8 inch Allen wrench sized nut, make damn sure the wrench you use fits tightly and is seated properly in the nut. Tool tolerance quality control isn’t what it used to be and a poor fit will strip out the nut on these very quickly. I’ve also found several of these truss rods tended to stick and require more torque than they should, use care or bring it to me to make the adjustments
