Often, when a client reaches out to inquire about coaching, they are stuck or bumping up against a structure they haven't been able to push through.

Over the past few weeks, I've been holding space for my coaching clients to pause, reflect, and celebrate. It's the most wonderful process to witness their growth, their celebrations, acknowledge their fears, and hold their courage. Having someone hold space for you during this process is worth its weight in gold. As one client said " I love reflections, but its something I can't do on my own. I am so proud of how I navigated this year!"

Peeling the Onion reveals what the REAL problem is.

When I began my career, I worked as a strategy consultant. My job was to get right in and solve the problem with ideas, frameworks, and what I knew worked. It was particularly effective for clients seeking solutions.

Over the years, as I evolved and matured both as a professional and a coach, I learned to slow down, notice, not make assumptions, and peel the onion. I ask powerful questions, and co-actively, with the client, we discover what the real challenge is.

Last week, while coaching a client, they (I coach a co-founder team) brought up the topic of " Decision making in the midst of Chaos". As we peeled the onion, the client discovered that they were NOT in the midst of chaos - though it felt like it. Once we were able to articulate that and clarify what was really impeding decision-making, the clients had a breakthrough!

This is why I love coaching. It's a proven systematic approach, which, by its very nature, is customized to the client, company, and prevailing issue. I don't need to be the expert in the industry, because the client is the expert in their domain. I am the expert in the process - and holding space.

Holding Space
It is such a powerful concept. I didn't know what it meant (until I became a coach), and neither did many of my clients, before we started working together.

Holding Space is at the backbone of supportive relationships and helps to bridge the gap between two people.

The term was first popularized by Heather Plett, a writer and facilitator who described holding space as "being able to walk alongside another person in whatever journey they are on, without judging them, making them feel inadequate, trying to fix them, or trying to impact the outcome".

This creates a sacred space between [coach] and [client] where the latter can express their thoughts, ideas, fears, and feelings without the need to be right, and in a manner they feel supported and heard.

The coach-coachee relationship matures in a safe space, where the coach holds space not only during the session but also between sessions.

As business owners and corporate leaders, our clients often find this unique safe space to reflect, grow, learn, and debrief invaluable.
