Plant this, not that: At first blush, common periwinkle (Vinca minor) seems like a great solution for shady backyard landscapes. It makes a good-looking groundcover--low maintenance and drought tolerant, plus it puts out pretty purple flowers. BUT did you know it's on the PA DCNR list of Invasive Plant Species? This shade-loving vine can spread into forests, forming thick mats that prevent native wildflowers from growing. So take a pass on periwinkle, and check out a couple of good-looking native alternatives. The lower-growing and evergreen partridge berry (Mitchella repens) looks great in your garden even in winter, with its shiny dark-green leaves and tiny red berries. Wild sarsaparilla (Aralia nudicaulis), a relative of ginseng, does well in full shade, semi-shade, and every kind of soil.

Periwinkle is a symbol of Ukraine. Garden and vegetable garden. Advisor - News ...
Periwinkle is amazingly hardy. In the places where its long slender stems come into contact with the soil, roots are formed, which allow the plant to "creep" over the site in all directions, forming a carpet of leaves and flowers. The best soil for growing periwinkle is loamy, with a high content of humus, moderately moistened.
