A lot of people have forgotten what waist beads can actually be, theyâre not some jewelry you just throw on because they look good.
Or something you wear for someone else to notice, but something that holds meaning and stays with you.
When she reached out earlier this year, she wasnât placing a random order.
She was trying to create an experience, and waist beads were part of the story she was telling.
We couldnât make that one happen because of timing, but the intention behind it is still worth talking about.
If youâve ever thought about using waist beads in a more intentional way, for yourself or for your group Iâd genuinely love to be part of that experience and curate something special for you. đ¤

The conversation around Manon did not really start with waist beads.
It became a conversation about identity. đ¤
Watching it unfold, it felt like people were trying to define what a real connection to culture should look like, using things like upbringing, location, or appearance as proof.
That is a standard a lot of women were never going to fit into.
Not everyone grows up deeply connected to their culture.
Some people find their way back to it later, and some are still figuring it out.
That does not make the connection less real.
Waist beads sit in the middle of that for a lot of women.
They are not just adornment. They can be a way to feel grounded, to reconnect, or to understand your body in a different way.
Have you ever felt like you had to explain your connection to your own culture? đđž

Thank you so much for sharing your story
Not every woman has a direct connection to their traditions from childhood.
For some, it starts with curiosity. For others, it starts with feeling disconnected and wanting to understand why.
This honestly just felt like the right story to share as weâre wrapping up womenâs history monthâŚto celebrate tradition, and acknowledge the different ways women come into it.
So, Iâd love to hear from you. đ¤â¨
Did waist beads come from your environment growing up, or did you find them on your own?

If youâre going to talk about peopleâs cultures online, please do your research. Accurately.
Waist beads didnât originate from one tribe. Theyâre worn across West Africa; Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Togo, and moreâwith different meanings in different cultures.
And yes! You can appreciate and wear cultural items without participating in or agreeing with every spiritual practice tied to them.
Wearing waist beads doesnât mean youâre worshiping anyoneâs gods. Thatâs not how culture works.
If youâre sharing cultural information, leave room for other people to contribute.
Donât speak with absolute authority on cultures that arenât your own đ

My honest opinion isâŚthereâs no right or wrong way to wear them.
I donât show mine publicly for personal reasons.
But if you feel comfortable wearing them in public, great.
If you prefer to keep them private, thatâs honestly fine too.
So Iâd love to knowâŚ
How do YOU wear yours? And why? đ
