Surfer’s ear, medically known as an exostosis, is a benign bony growth that develops in the ear canal. It often occurs after repeated exposure to cold water and wind, which can stimulate extra bone growth over time. Similar benign growths called osteomas can also develop in the ear canal.
In many patients across Dallas, these changes are found incidentally during a routine ear exam and may not cause symptoms at all. In these cases, no treatment is needed—just periodic monitoring.
However, when these growths become large enough, they can narrow the ear canal and begin to affect hearing or trap earwax, leading to discomfort or recurrent infections.

Ear endoscopy is an advanced technique that allows our specialists to see inside the ear using a thin, high-definition camera called an endoscope. This technology provides a detailed view of the ear canal, eardrum, and middle ear structures—areas that are often difficult to fully visualize with traditional tools.
In practices serving Dallas, ear endoscopy has become an important part of diagnosing and treating conditions affecting hearing and ear health. It allows physicians to better understand issues involving the eardrum and middle ear bones, improving both accuracy and treatment planning.
By offering a wider, more detailed perspective, endoscopy helps enhance care for a variety of ear conditions with greater precision.
