Nothing like the grin of victory after birth! Lots of hard work to get here. First birth was a cesarean, so mom did all the things she could to prepare for this VBAC. At the end of pregnancy, blood pressure began to tell us it was time to have this baby. A membrane sweep helped begin labor and the next day we had a baby in our arms!

After labor is over, the baby is born, we often need a little while to come back into ourselves. This too is sacred.

This is a natural time for baby to spend with other loved ones or simply next to mom.

Traditionally, postpartum is considered a cold condition, and balancing with warm foods, comfort, and rest helps to restore homeostasis.

See that little hand up by the head? Earlier I had done a membrane sweep and manual readjustment of baby's asynclitic head. And something I'd never experienced before happened--he grabbed my finger through the amniotic sac! It was quite a sensation to feel that from inside the womb--it actually startled me! A truly between-worlds moment.

When I think of the beautiful things in life, in birth, community always comes to mind. We are meant to be there for one another, to witness struggles and power and joy. The tender moments shared in birth are the ones that touch me as a midwife and a human being.
