She is our best reason for speaking Spanish! Meet Abuelita 👵 💕 My husband’s sweet grandma originally from Mexico City.
We flew out to Los Angeles this weekend to surprise her for her 90th birthday party! Everyone did such an amazing job that she almost fainted.
(Much like all of us watching the end of the World Series that night! 😜)
From her stories, to her dancing, to her tamales, she is always the life of the party. I’m so grateful we’ve been able to understand and connect with her over the years.
If you’re wondering if it’s worth it to invest in TalkBox.Mom, just look at her hugging Nolan in the last pic. 😭
I thought it had to be rigid, perfect, and quiet. 🤦♀️
That was me 20 years ago—a monolingual student trying to learn languages the hard way—long before I was speaking multiple languages with my family.
Turns out if you want fluency…
It should be loud.
It should be playful.
And it should FEEL like a dance party every single day!!! 🪩💃

As perfectionists, we want to be great when we start. ✨
While doing our best is admirable, falling short right when we start something new isn't disgraceful.
With courage, we can lean in to having fun. 🤩
Having fun will help us bridge that gap and refocus our goal so we keep going.
And when you keep going, you'll make incremental progress and accomplish your goal faster than if you had quit.
💪 How has TalkBox.Mom given you courage?

How do I muster up the courage to speak *new* languages? 😬 Dear goodness.
When I was in high school, I joined the school diving team, which trained at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.
Two friends of mine climbed up with me to the 10-meter platform — 32 feet or six of me at the time—seven of me if you count the height to my eyeballs.
We peered over the edge, and it was absolutely shake-through-your-soul frightening. How was it possible that the Olympic-sized pool looked so tiny from up there? It wasn’t right.
My friends backed away, and I took a deep breath, walked forward, and jumped as their frantic screams almost pulled my soul back up to the platform.
As I fell through the air, time seemed to slow down. How did I have so much time to think? Would it ever end? And then, as I splashed in, I realized the water was fine.
Did it make it less scary? No. But I was fine.
When we decide to speak another language, I feel the breath leave my chest like it did when I peered down from that 10-meter platform.
And then I straighten myself out and think two things: “I can do this,” and “I want to do this.” Even if I’m not sure if I can or want to!
Without these two thoughts, I would climb back down the ladder like my friends did that day, never splashing into the water to realize I’m fine.
If you feel like your knees are buckling at the thought of speaking another language, it’s a normal response. It’s time to take a big breath before the free fall. I promise TalkBox.Mom will catch you.
Today’s ice breaker: 🌊 How long did it take you to take the plunge and start TalkBox.Mom?

If you’re not feeling courageous, take my hand. If you’re ready to take on your dreams, let’s do it!
🧊 Here’s today’s ice breaker:
What’s the most courageous thing you have ever done? I’ll go first in the comments.

Happy Constitution Day! 🥳 237 years ago TODAY the constitution of the United States was completed, presented, and signed in this room. 🎉
WE THE PEOPLE 🔥
And my parents at every stop on this trip have argued over whether we came here as a family when I was a kid or not 🤣
Also, a big OOF to the gut over an entire paragraph that was taken out of the Declaration of Independence to get it adopted by all 13 colonies - which also happened in this room.
Today we enjoyed Philly, ran like Rocky, and completed three Practice Sessions in Korean with the Consistency Crew. ✌️
Aaaaaand to earn something at the gift shop, each kid had to share three new things they learned.
The highlight was the six year old: They were here, and now they are dead.
🤣 Sometimes we don’t see progress in the moment, but it’s happening.
👇 What are your must see recommendations in Philadelphia?

I had the BEST time with you! 😭
How do you sum up a MONTH in 10 photos? And the way it made me feel.
This has been one of the TOP trips in my life.
🇪🇸 We spent 8 days in Madrid using our Spanish, and it was so fun to just drop into another Spanish speaking country and be able to connect, learn, and laugh. Our vision for our family was beautifully rolling out in front of us.
🇮🇹 We then met up with my brother and his family to travel for 9 days through Rome, Naples, and Procida to see where my sister-in-law’s family is from and use some Italian! (which is new for us) The level of gratitude we felt to be here was unreal and seeing my older boys watch over and play with their little cousins was so 😍
🇩🇪 Last, we returned to Munich—where our first son was born, and for 12 days, we got to connect with the city and people who were with us when we went from a family of two to three. And it felt like a lost piece of me was restored.
🇦🇹 As a bonus, we snuck over to one of my favorite cities in Austria and got to share its beauty with my kids, and they were so impressed with the architecture against the breathtaking landscape.
🇫🇷 As a second bonus, we flew out through France, and after accidentally speaking German to the flight attendant 🤪 my 10yo and I ordered our drinks in French and became quick favorites on the plane. 😉
My soul is so full, and this trip is going to live inside of me for a long time.

We all made it to Italy and are having so much fun using Italian!!! 🎉 It feels like a party with all the pizza, pasta, and gelato we get when we speak Italian. 😍😜

When I started TalkBox.Mom, I never imagined having such an amazing team of women who care about your family and success as much as I do. 😭
We spent three days in Mexico City training and preparing to meet you (and possibly your family) at conferences this year—as well as exploring the city, its history, and tacos. 🌮
But we’re all kind of wondering what a “normal hat” is? GIFs with bad answers only 🤣
