August 17, 1999 - 25 years ago I remember most every one of the 1,440 minutes that day. I was awake for all of them. I had just gone to bed (around 1 am) when Adam came in and said he was really feeling bad, we called the doctor & he told us to go on down to the hospital that he would meet us there. We took him on up to the pediatric floor and got him settled, I left around 3. Got home and then went on into work. The saddest part of this was I went to work for 6 hours in the morning and didn't get back to him until the early afternoon, why I felt work was more important I don't know. If I had known this was his last day I would have spent it with him, the thing is I didn't and I can never get that time back.
I remember our last conversation: I said to him that if we could change places I would do it in a heartbeat. To which he replied: No this is the way it is meant to be. I love you dad. I leaned over and kissed his forehead and told him I love you son.
Gena called at 7 and said that things were getting worse and that they might have to put him in isolation. When Gena called back at 10 she said they were taking him up around noon. So I left work and went home to talk with Chad about what was going on, he said he would come down a little later. When I arrived on the pediatric floor they told me he had already been moved to isolation. The afternoon went fast and soon they were taking him down to critical care, where they put him in a chemical coma so they could ease his pain.
At 10:05 that night Gena, Chad & I decided it best to let him go and to turn off the machines the only thing making his body stay. Adam was now Free, he was back home where for some reason God thought he needed to be rather than here.
When we got back to the house around midnight Chad & I sat on the back of the orange 1968 Dodge Dart drank a few beers, smoked a few ci**rs, and made endless phone calls to family & friends with the news. There was a pa rade of people stopping by until 3 am that night.
You know with each passing year it seems as 364 days have become Adam happy moments, but this day still brings tears very easily.
We still go down a couple of times a year with Adam's Animals, Adam's birthday & the pediatric oncology Christmas Party always has a bit of Adam at the hospital for the kids. Adam's Animals has delivered over 90,659 NEW stuffed animals to these kids that so greatly deserve more but it's the only thing we can do to maybe bring a giggle & a smile for a moment!

And just a side note, Gena Hurst, Dandy & I are going to visit Adam this afternoon. If all goes according to plan we'll be out this afternoon in the pool drinking! TTFN!

This was the last picture of the 4 of us plus Maggie. It was taken on the way to Adam's graduation at the old Cowboy Stadium.
