Boys are always watching. Our worship, our words, our actions. Everything they see is shouting to their cerebral depths that they can become what they have seen. And I must say they have had a great example in this man. Ja’Mari is a good man to follow and model your life after. He places high expectation on them, and helps them slowly cultivate a vision for their life beyond themselves. He gives them permission to need God and to never do life on your own. Having a godly man to watch and learn from is worth more than gold. Ja’Mari has become what he was able to find in other older men at Forerunner when he was in school. How he lives and leads is a reflection of God’s faithful love. Yesterday we had a worship and prayer time after our last day of clubs for the semester. This guy poured himself out this school year for the boys at HQ, but to watch him pour out his heart to God last night. To contend for what he hasn’t seen in faith. A heart on fire is a joy to witness. You never know who is watching your life. You’ll never truly know what it meant to them. But what God does in you has the capacity to change eternity for others.

It’s a simple commitment - to show up 2x a month, build these young boys up with encouragement, and share the love of Jesus with them. Simple, and yet we have over a decade of evidence that this yes is enough to change the life of a family forever.

After holding back from the group to recover a lost whiffle ball in the woods ( ), the boys decided to recite the manhood declaration. Not sure we will ever know the significance of planting this in their heart, but I imagine a day when they will take their sons on a similar trip into the wilderness. I see them sitting by the fire, and the words in their heart from when they were a boy that spoke significance, value, and identity over them will come to mind. And they will lead their sons in the call and response of fathering.
