This World Refugee Day, we honor the nearly two million refugees who have made Uganda their home: families from South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and beyond, who are rebuilding their lives with courage, faith, and one another.

In Seed Effect Savings & Loan Groups, what starts as a small weekly contribution often grows into something far greater: a business launched, school fees paid, food on the table, and a community that prays together and carries one another forward. We see members come to know Jesus, grow in their faith, and provide for their families with dignity.

Forced displacement may change where someone lives, but it does not diminish who they are or the potential God has placed within them. Today, we celebrate the resilience, determination, and leadership of our refugee members who are creating hope for their families and communities every day.

In 2025, Seed Effect evaluated the Plan for a Better Business curriculum implemented across eight districts in Uganda, gathering feedback on key impact from nearly 700 refugee and host community members.

The results confirmed what we've long believed: training works best when paired with access to savings and a supportive community.
Plan for a Better Business equips Seed Effect members with practical business training - including the tools to start, strengthen and sustain small businesses that provide for their families.

Seed Effect’s updated 2026 Conservation Agriculture Curriculum is helping farmers grow deeper roots by equipping them with practical, hands-on training in soil health, crop rotation, mulching, composting, and sustainable farming practices.

By building on lessons learned and expanding demonstration gardens across communities, more families are gaining the tools to improve food security, increase yields, and steward their land well for future generations.

Because lasting transformation starts from the ground up. 🌾💚

Before joining a Seed Effect Savings & Loan Group, Viola Night was carrying the weight of uncertainty after being forced to leave school before graduation. Although she had completed tailoring training, she didn’t have a sewing machine to put her skills to use.

Through her savings group, Viola took a loan to start a small mandazi and pancake business, faithfully saved her earnings, and eventually purchased her own sewing machine. Today, she owns land, pays her children’s school fees, and continues building a brighter future for her family.

But beyond the financial growth, Viola found something even deeper—a community that supports, encourages, and walks alongside one another through life’s challenges. As Viola shares, “Joining the group has truly transformed my life.”

Hunger isn't always visible. For many families across East Africa, it looks like uncertainty about tomorrow's meal, limited opportunities, and the constant pressure to survive.

Through Seed Effect Savings & Loan Groups, members access the conservation agriculture curriculum from Equipping Farmers International and the Plan for a Better Business curriculum from The Chalmers Center. With improved agricultural methods and growing small businesses, members are steadying their incomes, strengthening food security, and providing for their families with dignity.

This World Hunger Day, we're reminded that flourishing happens when people are equipped to know Jesus, grow spiritually, and provide for their families with dignity: not just to survive, but to thrive.

Meet Betty. 🌱
She fled South Sudan with almost nothing. Today, she runs a tailoring business in Yumbe, has acquired three sewing machines and six chickens, and is training other young women to support their own families.

In her words:
"After I joined the Seed Effect group, I learned many valuable lessons. One of the most important was how to manage my money."
"The business brought many benefits. I can now help myself, take care of my family, and pay for my children's school fees."
"I train these girls by sharing the knowledge I have, so that in the future, they too can support their families and care for their children."

Betty's story is one of thousands made possible by a foundation that holds. Read our 2025 Annual Impact Report and watch Betty's story at the link in our bio and here at seedeffect.org/meet-our-members-list/betty-juan/. 💚

Did you know?

More than 132,000 members in Seed Effect Savings & Loan Groups have been empowered to provide for over 700,000 family members across South Sudan and Uganda.

These family members are being clothed, fed, and sent to school, not by aid but by the steady work of mothers and fathers who are growing in faith and building businesses with dignity.

Today, we celebrate them. Happy Family Day!

Today, we recognize those who brought children into the world, those who care for adopted or foster children, those who are waiting and hoping, those grieving loss, and those who nurture and care for the people in their lives with love and sacrifice. We celebrate you all today. 💚
