Pick up a book. Read together. That’s it.

School logic doesn’t work at home.
Schools and families are different systems with different functions. Their elements, interconnections, and purposes are all beautiful—but they are not the same.
So when I say we have to give parents back their voice during reading time, I mean this: reading at home is not the same thing as reading at school.
When we ask parents to read like teachers, we don’t get better readers. We get children who read to please adults—and teens who walk away because wonder was never part of the experience.
Parents are tired. Overwhelmed. Carrying more than anyone acknowledges. And instead of letting reading be the one place that joins them with their children, we assign them an instructional role that pulls them apart.
So pages dull. Moments slip.
And we are left with beautiful books celebrated for how well they perform in schools— not for the way they live inside families.
January 1 doesn’t need a reset.
It might just need a pause.
