A surge in hiring by American small businesses could run counter to the Federal Reserve's efforts to cool inflation. According to a Wall Street Journal review of labor data, small companies have been responsible for all of the net job growth in the U.S. since the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. They account for almost four out of five available job openings. Since February 2020, small businesses with fewer than 250 employees have hired 3.67 million more people than have been laid off or who quit, while larger businesses have cut a net 800,000 jobs during that time.

This could be a problem for the Fed; as long as the job market is strong, the Fed will have a hard time slowing down the economy and curbing inflation and will continue raising interest rates.

Tech companies such as Lyft, Microsoft, Google, and others have recently laid off a significant number of employees.

This has come as a surprise to many millennials and generation Z employees who joined tech companies during a decade of expansion, where jobs were abundant, and the companies were growing rapidly.

These younger employees were not used to experiencing widespread layoffs and viewed their jobs as a sustainable path.

In contrast, older employees such as baby boomers and generation X, who have lived through the dot-com crash of the early 2000s, have more experience with job loss and are more cautious in their approach to their careers.

A study by economists Ulrike Malmendier and Stefan Nagel found that personal experiences greatly influence a person's appetite for financial risk.

With a newfound personal experience, one can only conclude that generation z and millennials will be less likely to make a job moving forward. Working with a Senior Recruiter will be a must moving forward to ensure you get the top talent your team is looking for!

Employers should not let their guard down when it comes to earning the trust and engagement of current staff and creating a positive experience for potential hires. Companies are announcing layoffs and hiring freezes, while the tech industry is particularly active in cutting costs.

However, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are still 10.3 million open positions in the US, and 4 million people quit their jobs in October. Business leaders should consider investing in human capital, including recruiting top candidates, increasing compensation, investing in professional development, and adopting a flexible staffing model.

They should also budget for training new hires and graduates and consider ESG-related spending, including for dedicated staff and data generation, to protect the company from disruption and attract and retain skilled talent.

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled Help Desk Support Specialist to join our client's team on a 6-month contract-to-hire basis. After training is complete, there is the option for a hybrid work schedule, Monday - Friday.
