No one said physical activity had to be boring! Iowa is full of great outdoor recreation areas where you can be active and have fun.

Here are a few parks to explore: http://ow.ly/vzQF50GMyOb

Beautiful Day at Arboretum amongst the Oak Trees.
In 2004, The Brenton Arboretum contemplated developing a Nationally Accredited Plant Collection as the area of research had been a part of the mission since its founding by Mr. and Mrs, Brenton in 1997. The Kentucky coffeetree (Gymnocladus dioicus) was not currently a PCN collection and definitely under-utilized in the urban landscape.

Its adaptability to urban conditions and drought, with no serious insect or disease problems, would make it a likely candidate among diverse tree genera to replace ash trees affected by the Emerald Ash Borer as well as oaks being affected by oak wilt within our cities. With Iowa being within the core part of the species native range, it was also well suited for planting and thriving in central Iowa.

To say the least Brenton Arboretum Fall minis were a huge success! I will post each mini session this week but I want to shout out to some of the best small companies to work with! First The Traveling Basket! Wow what a great set up and seriously so attuned to detail and creative ideas! Secondly to The Boho Vase! Maria rocks! Seriously these vases are the cutest and she customs to what you want. Again another woman who goes out of her way for clients to provide the best for you! And lastly I want to thank The Brenton Arboretum It is a nonprofit arboretum and I love to give to them. What is created out there is just beautiful and I love being able to sit out there and enjoy the scenery. So here is to all who helped behind the scenes to make last Sunday an amazing day for my clients. You guys rock!

CAN YOU FIND THE GOLDEN EGG?
Clue to Egg #11: Beauty lessons from a tree:
Exfoliation is so important! You'll notice I'm constantly peeling.
Hydration is critical! That's why I prefer to live near water.
Don't be afraid to accessorize! Throughout the year you'll find me adorned with as many as 400(!) different kinds of butterflies and moths. They love to feast on my foliage.

Once you find the golden egg, take a picture of it and your fellow egg-hunters. Post it to Facebook and be sure to tag @TheBrentonArboretum so we know it's been found. Open the egg to claim your prize!

Just say NO to Callery & Bradford Pears

Spring is a great time to remind your friends NOT to plant Callery pears. Also known by the common name "Bradford" pear, these non-native ornamental trees are lovely when in bloom, but are becoming a serious threat to native woodlands by escaping cultivation and crowding out native trees.

Unfortunately, Callery-type pears are still commonly available at nurseries and garden centers. Besides 'Bradford,' you might find cultivars of ๐˜—๐˜บ๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ด ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜บ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ข named "Aristocrat," "Chanticleer," "Cleveland Select," or "Autumn Blaze;" all of which should be avoided.

So skip they Callerys and opt for fantastic flowering alternatives like crabapple, serviceberry, magnolia, or redbud. You can also feel safe to plant traditional ๐˜ง๐˜ณ๐˜ถ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ pears in your orchard, these are a different species and not prone to becoming invasive.
