This week Camp Merrill Fire personnel along with base safety, TMC, field medics, and flight crew participated in an annual mass casualty drill for the 5th Ranger Training Battalion. This is an annual exercise in order to certify personnel and keep skills current. Drills such as this one helps to maintain interoperability and good working relationships with each department involved.

Camp Merrill Fire personnel are currently assisting LCES and Amicalola Electric with traffic control and tree removal.

Trees are down and power lines are in the roadway on Camp Wahsega road due to high wind gusts.

Please avoid the area and use caution on the roadways.

Camp Merrill Fire personnel participated in live fire training this week on the rotary wing aircraft firefighting simulator. Crews were rotated through each position of nozzle, crew chief, rescue, and driver operator. Tactical objectives included proper apparatus positioning, water supply, fire suppression and pilot/crew rescue. These skills must be practiced and maintained in order to support the aircraft mission at Camp Merrill.

Camp Merrill is home to a medevac squadron which operates the Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter. The Camp also supports a number of rotary wing aircraft squadrons located throughout the state that use the area for training missions.

Training covered set up, operation, and use of the rescue winch and all associated equipment used for low angle rescue.

Because of Camp Merrill’s remote location in the North Georgia mountains, there is a need to be equipped for low angle rescue operations.

CMFD fire personnel trained on using Pneumatic Rescue Air Bags on this brisk morning.

These air bags can be used for a wide array of emergency rescue operations and are capable of lifting heavy loads with ease and efficiency. They work off the air from SCBA breathing air cylinders.

Just a few of the applications that air lifting bags can be used for include:
- Lifting and up-righting overturned vehicles
- Person(s) pinned under a heavy object (e.g. tractor trailer, train, vehicle, etc.)
- Rescue/recovery after collapses
- Forcing solid objects apart
- Providing a seal for leaking pipes drums or other cylindrical containers

CMFD carries these bags on the primary response engine, and all equipment necessary for their operation such as regulators, spare air cylinders, hoses, and fittings. These air bags have lifting capacities ranging from 15 tons all the way up to 41 tons.

CMFD personnel conducted training on UH-60 Blackhawks.

Training covered:
- Apparatus set up and positioning.
- Hose deployment and water flow.
- Making access to crew members.
- Emergency engine shut down procedures.
- Pilot/crew extraction procedures.

Camp Merrill has a Medevac attachment with 2 air medical UH-60 rotary wing aircraft. Students can be extracted and flown out in the event of a medical emergency. The medevac attachment is capable of providing advanced level/paramedic care to patients.

Camp Merrill Station 7 also protects a roughly 2600 ft. emergency runway for fixed wing aircraft.

CMFD mutual aid to LCES for a reported residential structure fire. No fire upon arrival, chimney flue was left closed causing smoke conditions in the home. No injuries.

In these cold temperatures if utilizing your fire place, inspect your chimney, ensure all dampers and flues are open, safely discard of ash materials.

Also consider space heater safety.

E-10 caught it's first fire with a mutual aid response for Lumpkin County.
