Chicks chicks and more chicks. We hatched six (the first picture and the larger ones in the second). Went to the J & E farm swap this morning and have eight more. Olive Eggers (green eggs) and Black Copper Marans (dark brown eggs). Jenns cluckers are expanding❤️🐥

Sweet Pea gave birth to twins on January 20th. After a fun filled week in the basement away from the winter vortex to stay warm, everyone is back outside in the barn. We have two baby girls who are doing fabulous for their first week of life. Names will be coming soon but for now enjoy some pictures🐐🐐

A message from Jenn: with a heavy heart I’m sharing this information. Our sweet twin boys passed away at two days old. We don’t know exactly what happened but we’re assuming the biggest factor was the winter vortex. The feeling of defeat is the best descriptive word I can use to explain the experience. Please know that we did everything we possibly could to save those two sweet souls. With everything that happened with the boys, we decided to move our other mother down to the basement to keep her and her offspring warm during the vortex. I am trying my best to tell myself this was a learning experience and we did everything we could do to save them, that nature can be very unkind. Learning from these boys saved the others born this year, and that was a very rough lesson to learn. Just know our other kids from this year are doing well and I will share them with you all very soon. Lastly, I would like to give a shout out to my friend Cindy who answered all my questions and walked me through every step we had to take. Thank you so much for your help Cindy, it really does mean so much to me.

Well Momo, Murder Mittens, and Appa all got their rabies shot today! Very thankful for the rabies clinic today in Burkeville. We are all set for three years! Also a shout out to Jenn’s brother Joey for helping with transporting Appa so we made it there safely. 🐶🐱🐶

One thing about Leah is she will always sniff out a chicken that is not in the coop. Turns out there was a stash of 35 blue eggs hidden in the barn that she found last night🤦🏼‍♀️ what else can I say besides oops I didn’t see the nest

What better way to cool off on a summer day than some watermelon🍉 the cluckers enjoyed it for sure!

One of the Ameraucana starting laying (about a month earlier than expected). Here’s a little comparison to one of the rhode island reds🐓

The chicks got an upgrade (courtesy of Shane). 8 new nesting boxes, a water tower, and a food drum that should hold about 7 50lb bags of food. Hopefully all the cluckers will live in harmony.

Bonus picture: we got our first blue egg from the Americuanas!

Throw back Thursday to a year ago when Appa and Momo were still tiny. They had legs for days!

Photos from The Bare Necessities Homestead 's post 08/20/2023

The boys are in a new pen with tall, green grass. The first picture is the pen they were in, the second and third is the new pen they are in, and the last picture? Well that’s murder mittens sleeping on the job.

The other day Appa and Momo were barking like crazy. Appa was in the hedge row circling something and Momo stayed barking in the fence with the goats. Turns out two hunting dogs had wandered onto the property. Very proud of the boys doing their guardian job🐶🐶

Some mother/child pictures from yesterday. Also peep Momo in the last picture wanting to be included.

While on vacation last week one of the girls got stuck in the chicken wire and scalped herself. Well with a little TLC she is becoming very friendly. She definitely likes to feel tall😅

Happy Gotcha Day to our barn kitty Murder Mittens! He plays with the big dogs, rides on Jenns shoulders, and will hop on the four wheeler for a ride. He is definitely one of a kind🐱

This time last year we were suppose to be on vacation. Well due to Covid that was postponed until this year. Hard to believe we have had Appa, Momo, and the four goats for a whole year already! Happy Gotcha Day!

Well the little ones are finally old enough. It’s weaning day. Appa is doing good helping the little ones deal with the stress of not being with their mommas.

Happy Mothers Day to all the wonderful mothers out there. Whether you are person momma or an animal momma, you are very much appreciated❤️

We introduced Momo to the chicks earlier this week. He is very much a gentle giant. He checked them out a minute and then went right back to Shane for pets.

The chicks have a new home and thankfully are out of the house😅
