Happy Semiquincentennial! πΊπΈ
Huh? It's a fun word, but what exactly does it mean? Here's your holiday vocabulary lesson!
Let's break it down:
Semi = half (Β½)
Quin = five (5)
Cent = one hundred (100)
-ennial = relating to years
Put it all together, and it means half of 500 years, or 250 years. This year's Independence Day celebrates America's semiquincentennial, our 250th anniversary.
Fun fact: The vote for independence actually happened on July 2, 1776. But, like every group project, it's hard to keep everyone on the same page and timeline π
The Declaration wasn't finalized for public adoption until July 4, and that's the date Americans have celebrated ever since.
So whether you're watching fireworks, grilling burgers, spending time with family, or trying to casually work "semiquincentennial" into a conversation today, I hope you have a safe and happy Fourth of July!
Happy Independence Day! πΊπΈπ

If you've been watching from the sidelines or just recently discovered the challenge, this is your sign to jump in! You don't have to start on Day 1. Activities can be completed in any order, and many families have already realized they've unintentionally checked off several boxes just by spending time together.
Here's how to participate:

Earn first entry into our prize drawing when you complete 20 activities.
Earn up to 4 entries per family! Details on the activity card.
Remember, this challenge isn't about creating the "perfect" summer or adding more to your already busy schedule. It's about slowing down, putting screens aside for a little while, and making intentional memories with the people you love.
Whether you've completed 1 activity or 20, every shared laugh, conversation, adventure, and quiet moment together is something worth celebrating.
Grab your activity card, I've included a blank one below for you to copy or screenshot . Invite a friend, and let's keep making memories together.

Current status: The tutor needs someone to tutor the tutor. π©βπ«
I spend my days telling students things like:
"You can do hard things!"
"Keep going!"
"It gets easier!"
Meanwhile... I'm over here studying for my final FTCE exam asking myself, "When am I ever going to use this when I grow up?" π€¦ββοΈπ€£ Lacking motivation and wanting to do literally anything else besides study.
Excuse me while I take my own advice: one page, one question, one step at a time. Taking all 4 General Knowledge subtests, Math, Reading, Language & Essay, on Thursday.
Good news is, Professional Educator & Subject Area Elementary Education are already in the books. The finish line is finally in sight!

A child's greatest teacher is often found on the sidelines, around the kitchen table, casting a fishing line, building something in the garage, or simply showing up day after day.
To the fathers who embrace the privilege and responsibility of teaching their children, thank you. Thank you for encouraging curiosity, cheering on big dreams, celebrating every milestone, and helping your children discover the unique gifts and passions God has placed inside them.
The time you spend reading one more book, throwing one more ball, helping with one more science project, or listening to one more story matters more than you know. Those everyday moments become the memories and life lessons your children will carry with them forever.
You are raising future leaders, problem solvers, creators, and compassionate adults. What an incredible legacy.
Happy Father's Day from Nurtured Knowledge! I hope your day is filled with laughter, love, and plenty of dad jokes.

Hey everyone! How is your Screen-Free Summer Challenge going?
I am in full VBS Director prep mode this week getting ready for next week's VBS, so I've definitely been less active online lately. But we are still slowly checking boxes off our challenge card!
Believe it or not, just because I came up with these activities doesn't actually make it any easier for me to get them done. π€« I tend to overfill my days, and by the time I get home, it is incredibly tempting to sit in front of the TV and veg out. But instead, I've been trying to be intentional with our evenings.
We've been pulling out card games, listening to my kids' silly stories and jokes, and working through a book together. It's not really a storybook, it's more of a book filled with activities related to self-sufficiency, homesteading, and simple living. It's sparked all conversations and inspired some fun ideas that the kids want to try. It's very Bushcraft, use-what-you-have. Honestly, it fits perfectly with the heart of this challenge.
Instead of rushing through dinner, I've been letting the kids take over parts of the meal that they enjoy making. Adrien has been making hamburgers, Amelie loves helping me bake bread, and I've been forcing myself to slow down instead of racing through the evening just so I can get to bed before the next busy day.
A friend told us about a community dinner in Frostproof, and we counted that as our picnic. π€£ We were outside, there were picnic tablesβit counts! Our backyard has terrible horseflies this time of year, and a dinner picnic back there does not sound enjoyable at all. Just being real. π€·π»ββοΈ
That same day, it started raining, and the kids were perfectly happy running around and playing in it while we waited for dinner. So just like that, we knocked out TWO challenge boxes in one evening!
Now I want to hear from you!
How many boxes have you checked off so far?
Which activity has been your favorite?
What activity are you hoping to complete next?
I'd love to hear what your family has been up to. Some of my favorite moments lately have been watching my kids flip through that book and come up with all sorts of bushcraft, creative, and homesteading ideas they want to explore.

Today I want to spotlight an activity that we have not completed yet but that we are looking forward to.
π¦ Activity Spotlight #23: Visit a Local Nature Center or Animal Sanctuary
This activity is a wonderful opportunity to slow down, explore the outdoors, and learn about the amazing animals and ecosystems right here in Florida. We love Circle B Bar & The Audubon Nature Centers around us, both free. Gatorland will be visiting the Haines City Library next week, they bring some of their animals and speak on conservation and habitats, that could totally count if you made it to that.
Here are a few other ideas:
π² Free or Nearly Free
β’ Visit a local nature preserve
β’ Explore one of the local Audubon Centers
β’ Visit Circle B Bar Reserve (Bring Water! Some of the trails are long.)
β’ Attend a free nature program or guided walk
β’ Look for birds, butterflies, turtles, and other wildlife
β’ Bring a nature journal and record what you observe
π²π² $5β15
β’ Visit a small wildlife center with a modest admission fee
β’ Attend a special educational program
β’ Pack a picnic lunch and make a day of it at one of the free options.
β’ Purchase a field guide and identify plants or animals you encounter
π²π²π² $15+
β’ Visit Wild Florida
β’ Visit Gatorland
β’ Explore a zoo or larger wildlife attraction
β’ Take an airboat or eco-tour
β’ Participate in an animal encounter experience
One of the best parts of this activity is that every visit is different. You never know what animals you might spot or what new things you might learn!
I'd love to hear from families who have completed this activity!
π Tell us:
β’ Where did your family go?
β’ What was your favorite animal or nature discovery?
β’ How would you rate the cost? (π², π²π², or π²π²π²)

Happy Sunday! This is how the Polynice home started their morning.
We completed Activity #3: Watch the Sunrise with Cocoa and/or Coffee.
I'd rate this one:
π² Free or Nearly Free
ββ A Little Prep
There was definitely a little prep involved for us since we're not exactly morning people, and there may have been a bit of convincing required to get everyone moving before sunrise!
The kids made their own "mochas" with a little coffee in their chocolate syrup, π while Mom and Dad enjoyed our usual morning brew. We took everything out to our trailer that often serves as a picnic table, watched the sunrise, and spent some time chicken watching while the flock started their day.
Now it's your turn! Have you completed Activity #3 yet? Did you make it out before sunrise or was it more of an early morning fresh air shortly after sunrise? Did you make coffee at home or go for an early drive to a coffee shop? Maybe you opted for orange juice at sunrise or had a whole cocoa bar.
How would you rate the cost and prep for your family? βοΈβπ

Need a way to complete Activity #5: Water Day?
This Saturday, Kids Confidence Homeschool Co-op is hosting a FREE Water Play Day!
I love supporting local organizations and events that create opportunities for families to connect, play, and make memories together, Kids Confidence offers fun family events that many local families enjoy.
In fact, several of their upcoming events could help you complete activities from the Screen-Free Summer Connection Challenge. Their upcoming brunch could easily count as a Picnic or Tea Party, and many of their gatherings fit perfectly with the spirit of the challenge!
Be sure to check out their page for event details and upcoming activities.

Activity Spotlight #22: Ice Cream Night
Who says making memories has to be complicated?
Ice Cream Night is one of those simple activities that can fit almost any budget and schedule while still creating a fun family experience.
Here are a few ways you might complete this challenge activity:
π² Free or Nearly Free - Enjoy ice cream already in your freezer, share a Neapolitan tub and let everyone choose their favorite flavor, build sundaes using toppings you already have at home, pair dessert with a family game or conversation night
π²π² $5β15 - Pick up a pint (or two!) from the grocery store, grab cones, sprinkles, chocolate syrup, or whipped cream, make milkshakes or ice cream floats together, visit a local ice cream shop for a special treat
π²π²π² $15+ - Take the whole family out for ice cream, visit a specialty ice cream shop, make homemade ice cream together, create an epic sundae bar with lots of toppings and mix-ins.
The goal isn't fancy ice cream. The goal is slowing down, sharing a treat, and enjoying time together.
I'd love to hear from families who have completed this activity!
π Share: - What flavor did your family choose? β’ Homemade or store-bought? How would you rate the cost? (π², π²π², or π²π²π²) How would you rate the prep level (no prep, same day, plan ahead)
Bonus question: What's the most popular ice cream flavor in your house? π¦π
