Is Rice Bowl Technology Part of Your Corporate Culture?
-Mike Joyner
If you were born this side north of the new century, or as far back to be deemed a millennial this may not ring familiar to you. In your ever-increasing retention of buzzwords and the incessant barrage of acronyms and the dual purposing of marketing speak this old but new catchphrase may have a significant impact on your young careers. For us ‘Boomers’ we might give pause to how we might mentor, pass on to those coming up behind us. To CEOs, directors, and managers you might take notice of how it truly impacts your bottom line and harmony in your corporate culture.
Rice Bowl Technology is actually not a new thing at all and has been with us in many forms, expressed in many ways going back long before the industrial age. It remains in practice to this day and is exasperated by the changes in technologies that seem to be conceived and rolled out faster than our ability to gleam daily press releases. Thinking it may have begun not long after fire and the wheel was invented…
Although my experience comes from designing Image Sensors. PCB’s, mixed-signal analog products as a frame of reference, Rice Bowling applies to the sciences and tech disciplines we are all familiar with and those we might not be. The concept in itself is very simple.
Imagine if you will that you are a new hire building a prototype with a very expensive mixed-signal IC that has many specific handling requirements, and unusual circuit design considerations. You come to me without any experience with this IC as a fresh out of college EE and all wild-eyed and bushy-tailed! Even though you ask one very basic question about maximum operating voltage we should use after looking at the front page of the datasheet, I know after decades on the job you really have dozens more, and a teachable moment is clear.
Instead…I answer my very knowledge-hungry junior engineer with one grain of rice no matter how big my bowl may be, even if overflowing with grains of helpful knowledge. No more, no less. They go away happy, not knowing what they don’t know, and I remain godlike in my master engineer persona. I may excuse my behavior in the name of time, or “I learned it, they can learn on their own” perspective.
Stay with me… visualize that despite being given the responsibility to oversee the new hire, as a practitioner of Rice Bowl Technology, I fail out of the gate. In this case, I know that my freshman EE can benefit from going over ESD procedures, use of bypass, concise routing, clean soldering, and the list goes on. In this case, it is easy as taking on the role of a mentor that fills in the gaps and helps reduce miscues, errors, or redoing the prototype several times just to power it up. Having a mindset of “they didn’t ask” serves no one and may cost the company in delayed schedule, additional materials, or an unsuccessful prototype.
The example is replayed in many ways between the engineering disciplines and often more subtle, other times it takes on the feel of needing a crowbar to have meaningful exchanges of important information. You can value add in so many ways, in interacting with your team, especially with customers as they often don’t know what they really need. One grain of rice at a time makes for a very slow learning process. The antithesis of rice bowling is to be engaging whether with a peer or a customer. A sense of teamwork goes a long way to thwart rice bowling.
Engineers, especially those with experience are sometimes reluctant to share what may have been learned over many years, fearful of being replaced with new hires that embrace newer technologies as taught in schools. It is perceived that accelerated learning with a very accessible internet pushes them out. Access to instant information wasn’t a thing until much later in my own career. I found it liberating, some that I worked with did not. On the other hand, there is so much that is glossed over now in favor of the next Arduino or FPGA platform, or exciting new programing language that what has been forgotten is new again. High-speed digital with more critical thresholds commonly used now is an example of old-school analog design skills being helpful in digital hardware design.
Over a forty-three-year career, I have had the pleasure of working with those that value-added their answers, engaged me, and pushed me to look at more than just one specific point. I have had a few peers and one engineering manager in particular that provided source material for this story.
Often when discussing company cultures that are engineering-centric, we often talk about management styles and policies. In this case we, our peers can choose directly to value add and not only build up the teams we are a part of, but enjoy a better learning experience and foster professional development in the simple exchange of ideas amongst us. From personal experience I can attest to it leading to innovation, creative problem solving and it leads to a more invigorated work environment.

Advanced 2.5D/3D Packaging Roadmap - Semiwiki
Advanced 2.5D/3D Packaging Roadmap - Semiwiki Frequent SemiWiki readers are no doubt familiar with the advances in packaging technology introduced over the past decade. At the recent International Electron Devices Meeting (IEDM) in San Francisco, TSMC gave an insightful presentation sharing their vision for packaging roadmap goals and challenge...

3D-ICs are expected to have a broad impact on networking, graphics, AI/ML, and high-performance computing. While there’s interest in 3D-ICs, it’s still in its early phases. Standard definitions are lacking, the supply chain ecosystem is in flux, and design, analysis, verification, and test challenges need to be resolved. Read this Featured Paper from Cadence to learn about 3D integration and packaging of multiple stacked dies, design challenges, ecosystem requirements, and more.

TSMC Arizona fab cost revisited - Semiwiki Back in May of 2020 I published some comparisons of the cost to run a TSMC fab in Arizona versus their fabs in Taiwan. I found the fab operating cost based on the country-to-country difference to only be 3.4% higher in the US and then I found an additional 3.8% because of the smaller fab…

Calculating PCB Circuit Density to Estimate Layer-Count and Required Technology A methodology for providing fast answers to the question of the board technology for a new design.

Best wishes for you and your family in celebration of all the good things we have and enjoy in this country. We are capable of so many great feats, monumental accomplishments, despite our imperfections, moving forward from the ills of our past.
Our way of life calls for us to be in keeping that we are all created equal. We are a young nation in the brief history of civilization and have weathered many storms, Never lose sight of what brought us together under higher ideals and that we still struggle and strive for that today. We have so much to be thankful for and to make good on the sacrifices of so many.
