Time for some updates! We really need to get better about this. So for the sad side of things: King Rooie was hit by a car. Our new fence was damaged by the wind storm last week and we completely failed at our garden this year. Now for the good. We are currently working on putting the damged sections of fence back up. We have made some improvements to the the chicken coop, including ripping out the old cieling and putting up chicken wire for improved ventilation during the winter months when they spend alot of time indoors. We've also begun the process of upgrading the windows in the coop from chicken wire covered holes that were covered with plastic last winter to real windows to assist with heating of the coop when the sun does shine this winter and to to just make it more entertaining for the chcikens while sitting on the roosts. Not to mention it looks better also. We also converted our small 14x22 hoop house into a chicken run to keep them safe after the loss of King Rooie. Also built a utility trainer lout of an old snowmobile trailer so now we can haul barn demolition debris to the dump easier! We purchased a rototiller to help with the garden work next year. Soil samples are being prepared to be sent off to the Cooperative Extension at UMO for testing. This will allow us to adequately amend our soil based on what they determine it needs.

We gave the chickens some ash today and it's their favorite thing ever. FunnyFace especially loves it, she's been rolling around for about 30 minutes and won't move even when the meaner hens tell her to. Though it seems counterintuitive, dust baths help keep chickens clean and free of external parasites.
